I really only know bands soo... I'm no help on Rap
The Kooks - They are actually British but so amazing. I'm in love with their song "Naive"
The Strokes - Very good American band. Their songs are on commercials for movies and stuff. "What Ever Happened?" is one I've heard in movies a lot
Augustana - they had a popular song "Boston". Their other songs are pretty good too
The Calling - American band but more popular in Europe. They have good songs... but I can't remember the names right now. They have a good sound.
The Fray - They have a lot of popular songs "How to Save a Life" or "Over My Head" are two popular ones. Though their whole cd is good
Incubus
The Killers - Their first CD is more dance-ish than their latest ones but most of their songs are good.
Ok Go - "Here We Go Again". They are a band but their music definitely has more of a dance beat to it.
Ben Folds / Ben Folds Five

I'm really liking Lupe Fiasco - Daydreamin, Conflict Diamonds
Story of the Year - Anthem of Our Dying Day, Sidewalks, Until the Day I Die
Death Cab For Cutie - Summer Skin
Foo Fighters - Everylong, Best Of You, The Pretender, etc...
Red Hot Chili Peppers (I like most their songs)
^ Those songs are kind of old since I haven't been keeping up with American music much either lol.

Hieroglyphics puts out some cool raps with an independent vibe.
M.I.A.'s stuff is great, especially her Arular album...talk about some bangin' beats!

I would recommend the band Eisley. They're pretty catchy, and personally, I love anything by them. Listen to 'Many Funerals' or 'Invasion' from their most recent album. Both songs can be found on the band's Myspace.
Oh, and listen to The Beatles because they are The Beatles. I've just fallen in love with them again.
