Here are my two cents. I can think of a few good cases for a post containing less than twenty characters. For example, 'where can I find the summary of episode blah?' can be answered by: post ###. Sometimes writing a simple 'I agree!' in discussion can be very meaningful, since validation can be a big part of a discussion (dot1q, I think you oversimplify the reasons why a short answer might be meaningless). Therefore, I don't think a minimum 20 character rule is a good one.
It is understandable that soompi is a large place and so it needs to be moderated according to some rules. That's certainly important! But, as someone posted (sorry, I can't remember who it was), the moderators should strive to make soompi a better place to be. I think the 20 character minimum doesn't help in that goal.
I see its good side, it cuts down on posts by people who might make a meaningless contribution, but it also prevents important posts that happen to be short. For that reason, this rule seems silly.

well with the post ## thing, you can get the Link of that post... so you don't have to do the 20 character thing. More work but w/e. When answering the question, I dont think just 'I agree' works....

Many people say how it will be better if we can post
as many amount of characters as we want, but
if you post just an "Agree," that
is usless, I'm sorry to say.
It means nothing and it's pointless.
In my opinion, which
is why I agree with this rule, is
that if you are willing to write a reply, then
write a reply that is worth reading.
I can only imagine how Soompi would look without this rule.
Some topics will have 20-30 pages of just,
"LOL," "Yeah I agree," "That's Funny" and
eventually no one will even bother reading replies.
If you are indeed just answering a question, then
quote what that person said and
it wouldn't matter how much you write because
with both combined, it
should be over 20 characters.
I mean there are some things
I don't agree with when
it comes to the rules at soompi, but
this is definitely something I aagree with.
When I write a topic,
I expect replies that I want to read.
I mean, don't even bother replying
if it's one word or so...
because that just doesn't make me happy.

Sure, I think people ought to write meaningful things, too. I don't want to read a million 'yup' posts (although, I did read a million 'i'm (not) on that list in this thread, which didn't violate the 20 character minimum but ironically wasn't adding much to the convo...). The thing is, a character minimum won't stop people from making meaningless posts, so I don't think it's a good reason to cite. If statistically most of the meaningless posts happen to be under 20 characters long and if that really makes a difference in other things (like not tying up the server) then I see some point in such a rule...but still...

people would have to go through 10 pages of "I agree!" "yes! me too", or "Ditto!", before they could find one post that was meaningful.
That's good enough.

that may be true but this wasn't a discussion thread anyway but more of a fyi
plus that also shows 20 characters isn't even that much, so not sure why some ppl are making it seem like it's a big deal
so in reference to dot1q's example of do u like apple pie or not, rather than just a yes or no could be stated as to why
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where--" said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat.

"I'm fine, how about you?" <that's 24 characters already.
Just refrain from using acronyms when you don't have anything else to say, like "Be back later, okay?" instead of "Bbl, 'k?"
It's not a big deal, people. :| It's always been around. Only this time they're enforcing it more strictly.

Criticism does not equal bashing.

Yes. As said earlier, a quote = 1 character.

they post in a topic and let's say it's a short post
and then sign it off with their name.
is that bypassing the 20 characters rule?
ie.
"omg he's so hot!
-lisahoney"
since it'd be similar to writing,
"omg he's so hot!
20characters"
