Hello all

I've been using this ipod nano (the old version) for about i would say close to 3 years. In the beginning it was fine but then this past year i've noticed that the audio and volume quality isn't that great anymore. When i listened to my friends ipod nano (hers was the new version) the quality was so good and she didn't have to turn her volume up high. But when i use mine..i have to turn my volume close to high but then the audio quality isn't that great as before. Maby mine has a scratch here and there on the back but i don't think thats the problem is it? Is it really cause i've been using it for too long? does it wear out? please advise !

thanks~ ph34r.gif

My nano looks like this i think its the first generation one only mine doesn't have the little grey battery thing on the bottom

ipod's don't have the best quality =/

could be cos you had it for three years, but I had my H10 for two (before my dad killed it T_T)
and the sound quality was still <3

I always though ipod's had a bad sound system

buy a new mp3

isn't there a warranty too?

I'm STILL using an ipod MINI.

The battery is WACKO. the sound is fine and all..since I have good earphones and all...but the only thing that really bugs me is the BATTERY...it can't even last 2 hours!!! Well..it prob can...but you have to be VERY careful not to scroll too much and ..yeah.

And it happens especially after i watch a video on it!!!! sad.gif sad.gif so i don't watch anymore videos that i have, but it still goes on day by day. What can I do?!

thanks for the replies. Maybe it is getting too old..but then people have it for longer time and the audio/volume is fine. Or maybe cause I do scroll it ALOT cause i have about 160 songs...doesn't seem like alot compared to alot of other people. And i like scrolling cause i always listen to about halfway of the song and scroll down to another song that i like. Do ipods have a 1 year warranty? cause if they do then my warranty has been long expired.

Theoretically, since the Nano is all digital, it shouldn't degrade with age. When comparing sound quality remember to use the same files... because your friends might just have used MP3s with higher bitrates.

I think the new Nanos do probably sound a bit better (newer technology after all) and now you're psychologically picking up on things you wouldn't have cared about before... like now that you know that it's worse you're just listening more carefully.

i have an ipod like yours but I don't have any problem with the sound.
The problem I had is about the earphones... so I bought the cheaper ones, but not they're not as good as apple's. XD

and my ipod's battery is horrible. It takes so looooong time to make it charged.

may be because its old already? O_o
i don't really know.

Yes. It can make a huge difference. Personally, I'm not huge on audio quality so I rip my music at 192 bitrate. I know a friend who loves the quality and rips his CDs at 320 bitrate. Obviously, even on the same iPod, his files would sound better. At the same bitrate, a file bought off iTunes might sound better than something you rip yourself simply because they're working with a higher quality original.

The only real way to compare is to send your friend 2-3 MP3s that you use and ask him to upload to their iPod. Then using the same headphones, listen to the same song on both iPods (remember to turn off all the audio settings). If you do that and you're still finding your iPod sounds much worse, then you can know for sure.

Headphones degrading is a real possibility also so it's important to use the same headphones.

Itīs sounding like your Ipod is slowly dying. mellow.gif
I have the same, a Nano too, and after not even one year it suddenly went black and I couldnīt start it since then anymore. I havenīt used it that much before, so that it canīt be because of the battery. I have no clue what happened and canīt even reset it. tears.gif

Maybe there's a virus in it?
My iPod caught a virus and yeah. dry.gif

Erm, generally my iPod is still working fine.
It's better than other products actually (I compared with friends)
But it's just the virus that's bugging it.
I don't think it has anything to do with the scrolling thing since I have 800+ songs and I scroll more than you. sweatingbullets.gif
I think you should send it to service or something.

Different from the original ipod problem...
Your problem is the screen is probably loose or damaged. Could be a problem with the ribbon connector or screen itself.

sound quality

As for the original poster:
Have you tried using a different pair of headphones. It sounds like you like to crank up the music so its possible you destroyed your headphones already.
In theory there is nothing in a ipod that will degrade in terms of just sound quality. The three possible things that can degrade include the battery, hard drive/flash memory, or headphones. The quality of the music will play a big role in how it sounds... and will pretty much reproduce whatever error and limitation of the music you put in. Get some music from your friend and see how it sounds on your ipod. Then try other headphones.

Battery just wears down over time and looses its ability to hold a charge.
Flash/hard drive will wear down and will probably becomes damaged over time. With that some people will experience skipping and errors in their music. However it sounds pretty much unrelated to your problem!
Headphones if you consider is just a tiny speaker... magnet with a coil of wire attached to a cone. If you listen to it too loud, you will warp and destroy the cone and make it sound terrible.

I haven't tried using a diff pair of headphones but i will definitely try that...i never knew we could use a diff kind of headphone i always thought we had to use the one they gave us when we buy the ipod.

And..can you really get a virus on your ipod? How is that possible??

No I have not read anything about a virus for an ipod. Its certainly possible for your ipod to pick up a virus that will spread like... if you connect it to a infected computer and it will infect the ipod so every computer it connects to will get it... but thats just the idea of storing data on the ipod like a USB drive.
However... it wont affect the ipod itself, just your computer lol

So no, I doubt you have something like that.
