So I was just wondering any of you other asian people out there get this problem. My non asian friends have always been teasing me about the way I get really red after having just one beer.

I mean its not the cute rosy cheeks sorta thing, its my entire face getting red, I can literally feel the heat radiating off my skin. And then everyone thinks I'm drunk when I'm not. I tend to avoid drinking because I look like a beetroot loool.

So..... I did a bit of researching and found an article on this website

http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB1124...aoGHaKuCm4.html

Which I found interesting, apparently 40% of asians have this deficient gene which means they can't digest alcohol properly.

I turn red even if I drink one bottle of a 5% alcohol drink.

Asian Glow!! Ahahahaha xD
There's debates between doctors about what causes it..but most say that it's because Asians tend to be missing a certain enzyme that breaks down the alcohol...so then we get red.

I hate it. People think I'm drunk after a sip...which I'm not
So I hate drinking with friends.
I like to have a few cocktail here and there...
but my eye starts to get red and I just look mad drunk.
Does this work?

i have had a doctor explain to me that it is all about liver function. some people are born with the right enzymes i the liver to handle alcohol fast. most asians dont have this but apparently, everyones liver can adapt grdually to process it. so the doctors advice to me was to drink small quantities bit by bit over time to develop the enzymes. however, i think he said the red face will always be there, its just that you wont lose control of your reflexes etc.

personally? i think western alcohol sucks real bad and is somehow poisonous. red or white wine takes ages for my body to flush it out (days even). so i avoid them totally. however, ii can drink sake no problem.. weird.........

I knew that it was common, but I didn't know that 40% of asians get it..
I don't get the asian glow though. I'm still pale after drinking.. my face doesn't go red at all..

Asian Flush!

I get this when I drink, but it only starts after a couple of beers. Some of my other Asian friends instantly turn red when they drink a little bit of alcohol.

everyday, it's You i live for...

Yeah i do T_T after the first drink which just SUCKS. Looking tomato red in photos isnt a good look.

Take Zantac :x its for heartburn and stomach acid... but if you take it 20mins before your first drink, it'll stop the asian flush. Doesn't work for everyone though but it works for me :x ....................... *runs*

i'm deficient in that gene as well. after 2 beers, im all red and my dad gets real red after 3-4 beers too, so it's probably from him =/

most asians are lactose intolerant too, something about the lactase enzyme not working properly.? o_o

OMG my non asian friends say exactly the same thing aswell. It really pisses me off how they think asians are bad drinkers. I probably have better tolerance than they do loool.

Yea I have this as well.
But I find that it's not that bad if you drink small amounts regularly because your body gets used to the alcohol levels.
Although I find that only works if I drink the same drinks as I usually do. Example, I normally drink vodka and coke so if I'm out and I stick to spirit then I'm fine. The redness is kept to minimum.
But as soon as I switch to something like wine or champagne then I'm both really drunk and red =]
