Do you have a lot of add-ons/extensions? Sometimes these can impede the speed of your browser. Try opening firefox through safe-mode and see if your problem persists.
"But when it ends and while it ends, something comes, after so much rage, persistence, obstinacy, extravagance; something entirely unexpected and touching in its mildness and goodness. With the motif passed through many vicissitudes, which takes leave and so doing becomes itself entirely leave-taking, a parting wave and call, with this D G G occurs a slight change, it experiences a small melodic expansion. After an introductory C, it puts a C sharp before the D. . .and this added C Sharp is the most moving, consolatory, pathetically reconciling thing in the world. It is like having one's hair or cheek stroked, lovingly, understandingly, like a deep and silent farewell look. . . . " (Mann: 55).

Are you using Firefox 3?
My firefox has a file in the profile folder called "urlclassifier3.sqlite" that was 45mb... I deleted it and my firefox is normal again. I think it was a poorly written database bug.
C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\RandomValue it was in there. Application Data is a hidden folder so just type it in the box.
Otherwise.. still go to that folder copy your bookmarks.html... then
move the folder out and start firefox. It will loose ALL its settings. But, you can put the bookmarks file back and make it happy again.

Hmm...you can try
1-using latest version
2-remove add-ons
3-running in safe mode
4-continue with safari

omgosh, you're not alone!
this happened to me...i think it was last month. my internet was unusually slow. even loading a single page would take forever...it wouldn't stop lagging until the bar on the bottom was fully loaded. i tried everything to attempt to make it faster...only thing was, i didn't realize that it was the browser, not the internet, that was causing the problem.
then one day i tried using internet explorer and everything was super fast...like how it was usually. i was so happy! lol. so then after i found out it was firefox that was slow, i just went to mozilla's site (i think it's mozilla.org?) and redownloaded it again. i'm not sure if i had an old version of firefox or not, but when i redownloaded it, it was back to normal. weird. maybe i just had an old version, or missed an "important update." i'm not sure, but you can try! good luck! i feel your pain....lol. don't worry, my bookmarks and everything were still there.
