Hello, i'm currently a sophomore in high school and did cross country and track freshman year and sophomore year (almost done with track season). Although i enjoy running, i'm not sure if i can continue it for my junior and senior years because i get home from practice at around 4-5ish so tired and am gonna be taking pretty hard classes next year. do colleges like seeing 4 continuous years of sports or is it ok if i just finished my required 2 years and stop? im looking forward to going to any of the top UC's so im wondering if its better to continue cross country and track till end of high school... will taking 2 years instead of all 4 years of sports affect my chances of getting into UC considering the fact that i have decent grades and will study hard for SAT's and stuff... i mean if it's not THAT important i wanna quit sports so i can have more time for studying my junior year but then again i wanna stay if having 4 years of continuous sports is pretty good on a college app. LOL .. thanks!

Sports itself is not a major thing unless you are a standout. However, they like extracurricular activities, so if not sports maybe clubs, community service etc. instead of sports. They all are considered as extracurricular activities so you will have to do something besides sports either way.

If you don't want to do it, I wouldn't suggest it as it can get pretty tiring coming home late at night from meets with ~3-4 AP classes... unless you want to win scholarships from sports. Hope that helps :]

i mean, they like consistency, but colleges are aware of how tough it can be to handle sports with academics
so if you decide not to take 4 years, try to "make it up" with other extracirriculars

They like consistency. They also want to see that you're able to balance a tough course load with other activities.

During sports season, I usually get home around 6:30.

Like others have said, colleges really like it when you've done an activity (or several activities) consistently, since it shows dedication. HOWEVER, if you're really worried about it affecting your schoolwork, and are maybe 70% sure that it'll make a noticeable dent in your grade, then consider it again. Colleges like extracurriculars, but unless you're a star athlete or something, they don't like it when it shows that the activities have affected your work and that you can't handle the workload you've chosen.

so does it mean that they don't like seeing you do sports only for your first two years of high school and stop for the next two years? like,, how would they know?

I think it'd be good to continue seeing as how colleges like to see commitment. (Plus track and XC are a lot of fun!)
However, if you can't handle your schedule and it'll be pretty detrimental to your grades, I wouldn't recommend doing it.
You could always make it up with extracurriculars or community service. Summers are really good for community service and the hours build up pretty fast IMO.

It'd be best to continue with the sports for the next 2 years if you can keep up with your homework.
However you could probably skip out on track season of your senior year since by that time you should already have sent in your applications. (but then you wouldn't need to worry about college, eh?) XD
I think they'd know because when you fill out applications I think you write how many years you've done a sport...? I'm not really sure, so don't quote me on that. XD
