Okay so I have a Vista with a 1GB RAM..hold it,don't shoot me yet,and I'm in my way working out to smooth my laptop without paying any more cents as well as my energy of tossing it out my 4th floor apartment.

I'm a noobie at this with skill only little better than your Grandmom.
I hope there's people who are helpful enough to give me few details from your own Vista like RAM,Processes, CPU Usage % and Physical Memory as well as any utilities programs that you used to survive Vista.

Personally my current processes is 65 after a whole lot of ending process
CPU 6% thought I don't see how it's important to mention this
Physical Memory 89% due to Mr.Firefox being a sly fox indeed

My utilities that I've managed to acquire includes Wopti, which I adore but currently unistalled for speed reasons.
The Ultimate Troubleshooter which helps to minimize your processes and services alot!! I learn which to end program from here. But it's hard to handle considering my computering level.
Currently looking for memory booster but not sure which yet.

-EDIT-

I also think I screwed with my programmes a little to far and now my external hard disk has no autorun abilities and my ReadyBoost is left to be tried out.

And anybody know how to get screen snapshot for laptops? I know for pc we can use Print Scr but I'm at my wit end for laptops excluding more software to intall.

ps: I dunno if there's any other thread for this,if there is one please delete and inform me. Thx in advance for helping.

1gb of ram will work well enough for you. I have used vista with 512mb before now thats a drag.

Its possible to go down the list of services to remove some of the extra stuff but that won't really make a big difference. Firefox takes up about 120mb ram? If its any more than that, just exit and restart firefox. It does have a tendency to be a memory hog.

I don't think there is much those utilities will really help you with, if you want more memory, it might be worthwhile to disable superfetch because that preloads program into your ram so they open faster. There is only so much those programs can do and organize your memory... just try to clean up what the computer starts with and stick with that. ReadyBoost is similar to superfetch and I don't think it will really help you much. I think you should just use it the way you use it and stop worrying. sweatingbullets.gif

You have stated that you use things other than Norton so you're already pretty optimized there.

You can get screenshots by holding the [FN] key on the keyboard and pushing the print sc button. Whatever is in the [ ] on the keyboard needs you to hold the FN key to get those functions to work.

Thx , I'm using AVG as for now since my Kaspersky got blacklisted.

The problem with my physical memory is still driving me crazy! I'm a college student that needs to load huge files especially photoshop and illustrator so it really becomes a huge issue when my pc keeps getting hanged and my friends don't.

I tried to use the FN and PRT SC and nothing happens.

Uh try pasting after you do the FN+Prt Sc

Mhm.. then there really isn't much you can do other than save up for the upgrade. Photoshop is a memory hog, vista takes up room and basically thats how it will operate. Unless you have some other crazy background programs you can disable there really isn't much left for you to disable or turn off. I don't think the whole aero theme takes up much ram either, just CPU cycles.
2gb ddr2 sodimm is about $40 now, thats quite cheap for what you get. If you spend some time to check some bargain sites like techbargians im sure you can find that same 2gb stick for about $20.
