I'm just wondering if any of you ever had Japanese hot pot?
Recently I went to eat at this Japanese restaurant in Chinatown Boston, called Shabu-Zen
It was really delicious !

here is some pics

^mix it yourself sauce..really really good

^the meats are thinly slice

The main difference is that Chinese hot pot usually has "mah lah" (really spicy), while Japanese hot pot is not spicy at all.

I LOVE IT, though. Mainly the Chinese "mah lah" hot pot - bombbbbbbb. Only downside is that your clothes will smell really bad afterwards, but what the heck.

at some places they use kobe beef, but that would be expensive
oh yea you know how it's splitted in half, one side is really spicy and the other is mild
my friends and I killed the spicy side first

talking about this makes me want to go eat there again!

It does look alot like Chinese hot-pot but I suppose the main difference is that the broth for shabu shabu is made of dashi, which is traditionally Japanese.
I believe the sauce used to dip the meats, etc is also different from the Chinese version.

But what the hell, they're both SO good!
I do prefer sukiyaki to shabu shabu though (well...no...depends on my mood).

I've seen people eat it in dramas but actually never get to try it. It looks good especially with the meat and the salmon. and i was just wondering, what do they put as for the soup base? Is it the same as like those chinese hot pot where we just put chicken broth?

Didn't Korea start to serve Shabu-Shabu (Japanese style) like one of their specialties around the year 2006?
It wasn't really well-known before that -correct me if I'm wrong- but now if you visit our home country you'll see
they are embracing all different kinds of food from around the world. G's... koreans are hella talented at cooking.
No wonder most are in the food business. The only thing is compared to 분식/common 한식 dishes, this costs ten
times more... lol
