who here wears hard contacts? i had my yearly eye exam yesterday and my optometrist asked if id like to switch to hard contacts, and the thought of hard contacts made me a little uneasy, because i've always worn soft contacts but she said if i wanted too see much better, hard contacts would be the best?

is it hard to put in, hard to take out? how long does it take to put in vs. soft contacts?? and how does it feel, is it weird to have the feeling of 'glass' in your eye?? how long does it take to get use to??

I wear hard contact lenses.
Really, it doesn't feel like glass. More like plastic. Actually, you don't feel anything after it leaves your fingertips and into your eyes.
It's not that hard to put in.. Although it might make you feel more queasy because if you screw up, you really do screw up.
It doesn't take that long to put it in once you practice putting them in and taking them off.
It takes a bit more time taking them out though. You get two options - blinking them out or using a plunger. You probably need a few more seconds to actually make sure it doesn't like fall down or something.
Hard contacts are pretty okay once you get used to them.

yea, i wear hard contacts.
the first couple times wearing them are HELLISH!! but then afterwards, you dont notice them anymore like soft contacts.
its not any harder to put them in or take them out. i actually think its easier. i tended to have a harder time keeping my soft contacts in place after i put them in. and using the plunger is uber cool.
the only thing is, i think my eyes have some crappy reaction to hard contacts or something cuz my contacts randomly start irritating me every once in a while. sometimes it goes away after awhile, other times im actually forced to take them out. HOWEVER, i think this only me cuz i know plenty of ppl who say their hard contacts have never irritated them

if you have bad eyesight and they seem to get worse, then i suggest hard contacts to control it. thats the only reason i got mine.

I have hard contacts one and I wear it at night.

to answer your question, the first time when I had it, it took me like half an hour to put one for each eye (I wasn't used to it) and it is not hard to take it out. Just make sure you wash your hands thoroughly. I never have soft contacts so I can't really answer your next question. Once you put in your contacts, you can't really feel anything because you have to put some gel on it first before you actually put it in your eyes. SO basically you just get this 'cold' feeling. It took me probably three months to get used to it. I've had it for four and a half years now.

^ Same here. The first time I had hard contacts it took me forever to put them in. I remember once I tried to put it in and it slid to the very side of my eye and I was totally freaked and didn't want to wear my contacts anymore because I was too scared. And the first time I had put them on, it felt like my eyes were BOUNCING which was really weird. But, if you put the eyedrops into the hard contacts before you put them on, it doesn't feel like anything is in your eye (unless you don't clean your contacts.) Also, before when I had first had my hard night contacts, it was so easy to take them off and so hard to put them on. Now, it's a lot easier to put them on than take them off with the plunger. Hard contacts aren't as bad as some people think they are.

I just switched to hard contacts this week from soft contacts.
I actually asked my doctor to switch me because I stopped wearing soft contacts because my eyes were drying out within a few hours of putting them on.

They aren't THAT bad. Comparatively, they are quite uncomfortable the first few days but the adjusting time isn't too unbearable. The feeling.....its like having a dirty soft contact?? Or a soft contact that's suppose to be thrown out soon.
Putting them in is exactly the same as soft contacts expect they aren't quite "self-centering" so you have to stick it right on your pupil or you'll have to feel around for it and manually move them back to the centre of your eye.

i love my soft contacts. i had to take maybe 2 weeks to finally get comfortable putting them on, but now it's just so easy to put them in and take em out. I would suggest soft lenses because they feel so comfortable; however, you will have to change contacts every couple weeks. hard lenses can last forever, but i hear that sometimes they are just uncomfortable.

Why didn't you ask your optometrist these questions while you were there?

I wear soft contacts, but my friend wears hard.
She says soft are WAY more comfortable for her, but her doctor said that if she doesn't want her vision to get worse, then she should stick with hard.
And thats the truth, cause my eyesight is dropping every few months D:

I suggest that you listen to whatever your Doc says ...
I used to buy lenses randomly and I once bought hard lenses it scratched my left eye cornea! and don't ask me about the pain.. it was unbearable!
and when I asked the optometrist why.. he said that all lenses depend on the Elongation of the eye... so.. that's why there are different kinds of lenses
so maybe hard lenses are the best kind of lenses that'll suit your eyes..

what gel are you guys talking about? what's the name of it?

I tried hard contacts before but i never got any gel to put on my eye before the contacts. It hurts like hell for me and would get used to it for a couple of hours and then it would hurt again. I quit after like a month, i know total waste of money but i really couldn't stand it, espeicially since i have extremely dry eyes.

I use to wear hard lenses until I switched to soft lenses. Soft lenses are so much more comfortable. Hard lenses are smaller and easy to put in but does take some time to getting use to. It's feel like a rock in your eye the first few times. It's very easy to take out too.

I've always worn soft and I don't think I could ever wear hard. I have friends who wear hard contacts and near the afternoon, they usually have to take them out and switch to glasses because they say the contacts are bothering their eyes.
