As the topic says, are there any Interior Design majors here?
I'm planning to major in Interior Design next school year and I've got a few questions... more like I like to inquire on what I can do if I take up Interior Design.
First off, (honestly) can Interior Designing provide a secure future for me?
I really really like to be an Interior Design major... but I also want to help my mom in the future. (And by the time that I'm on 3rd yr of college, my brother will be in college too -o-) So please please tell me what I should look forward to (the good and the bad) in the future.
I know that there are different fields (in Interior Designing) in where I can specialize... what are they? (o.o)
One last question, I'm part Japanese... and my parents would love it really if I moved to Japan after my studies... and so... do you guys think that there are any good opportunities in store for me in Japan?
Thanks in advance!
---
I put it in this forum because I wanted to hear inputs from Interior Design majors themselves... (o.o)
Or at least... to those college people who knows about the course.
I've already spent days and days finding out information about this field... but I decided that it'll be best to hear from those InD majors instead. (:

well... iam a interior design student. yes, you can make pretty good in the field. If you are a 3 yr student and someone hires you, you are allowed to charge a min of $60.00 an hour.
you can always work in residential(homes) and commercial(restuarants) and even exhibits. there really is a huge field in interior design, some people just graduate working in lighting cause they like it so much or draft for a comp. CAD.... One of my instructors is working on a building in dubai on those manmade island. so yea shes making the bread... lol

Im an interior design student (going to be a sr next year finally! lol )
Int.Des. is secured but it is really competitive, like an design major I think. You can specialize in restaurant design, hotel design, residential design, spa design, set design (theater set, set in movies, tv shows, commercials, etc), lighting design, fabric design, you can just be a CAD person, render person, a sale presentative for the company, kitchen design, bathroom design, furniture design, green design, hospital design or specialized hospital, retail design, window for the retail design, etc haha pretty much anything interior wise. I dont know much about Japan so idk how to answer your question. but Im sure they need interior design over there...I would try to go to the commercial design (anything public place, restaurant hotel offices etc) cause it is more secure and more jobs compare to residential design where you only design home interiors. also there are companies that do project oversea/ other countries, so you just need to search, ask your advisor, join some interior design organization like IIDA.
good luck with everything!!!its a really fun major!! and you get to meet cool classmates and become really close to them cause the major has a small amount of students compare to other majors.

i'm taking the diploma so it's 2 years + 4 years of work experience to be able to take the ncidq test instead of the bachelors which is 4 years of school +2 years of work experience
newhums, with interior design you can have so0o much choices. for example you can be a sales rep. you can rep. a tile store and go to interior design firms and tell them to use the tile store as their main choice. u know wat i mean? you can focus on residential, commerical.. like others have mentioned.
imo, it's a pretty intense program. it def. wouldnt be a 9-5 job :].

Thanks guys really. It helped. (:
First, I was still having doubts about it... and so I convinced myself to check out other courses... but then I found it hard for myself to think of the fact of not being able to pursue my dream of being an Interior Designer. I guess... it really is for me.

So, I want to major in Interior Design, but... people are discouraging me because of the economy getting worse, and the competitive-ness.
Is it really worth it? I can't imagine myself majoring in anything else.. And I don't really know what's required (like in portfolios), because honestly, the closest I've come to design is web and graphic design

The main question is... do you see yourself designing spaces...?
Like setting up furnitures... picking which colors are suitable for a room...
Basically that kind of stuff...
If you could see yourself doing that.. then do it. (:
By the way, I'm currently in the Philippines... and I think of going overseas after completing the course.
So if the market of Interior Design isn't really well in your place... you should consider going overseas.... (o.o)
