How Do You Cope With High Gas Prices?

Here are things I've done (not implying I do these all the time):
I've been taking the bus about once a week to my afternoon class
Drive the speed limit and shift in lower RPM range (went from 25 up to 28mpg)
Friend who's family bought a home 3 mins from mine turned into a weekend carpool buddy

Kidding.
I don't do a goddamn thing. It's a cost of living, and not one that's easily navigated around. Run the numbers; I live close enough to work and school that I can walk and take the train, but when I used to commute, I was putting on about 10k miles a year. Average is something like 12,000.
Running the numbers with my 25 mpg-ish TSX, that's..
10,000 miles / 25 miles/gallon -> 400 gallons
A price increment of:
$1 -> $400 extra/year
$2 -> $800 extra/year
I was reading recently that $5 gas is about a 2 year horizon. I could double my driving and take $5 gas without blinking, and having the numbers ahead of time helps me plan it into my budget (FWIW, "fudge factor" on my car budget alone is $2k).

1. When at home, drive my car only once a week.
2. Shift gears at the manufacturer's recommended speeds.
3. Avoid hard acceleration and hard braking, and coast along the road without pressing the pedal, especially when approaching traffic lights.
4. Follow the speed limit.
5. No street racing
6. Currently, I have been staying out of town for several weeks, and I ride the bus to the metro station to get to downtown D.C., then walk another 10 minutes from the metro station to get to class. Advantages: exercise; save money on gas; walking instead of riding the bus also saves money (but only $1.00 per trip
One thing I prefer not to do is carpool because I enjoy my personal time in the car. I can do whatever I want and listen to whatever I want without having to mind someone else in the car.

look for gas stations with the lowest price
car pool when going out (usually have the friend with the most efficient car drive and give him a few bucks for gas if its a long trip)
take out things not necessary in the car
keep tire pressure at recommended pressure

That's 30-35 bucks worth of gas T_T , one week worth of driving back and forth to work.
I do most of my shopping online, it's cheaper, because there're discounts and free shipping codes.
The shipping cost to return the items aren't that bad either, around $5-6.

Good tips, esp the tire pressure.
Also... replacing spark plugs would help.

being a uni student and working only once a week i need to dedicate half of my pay every week to petrol.
uni is 40 - 50 mins away from my house. 1.1 hrs by bus and train.
catching public transport is a pain in the rear end. i have to wake up extra early and the chances of finding parking at the train station early morning is low.
Also i have a parking permit at uni...don't want to waste it!
i guess i go out less nowadays, thats my way of coping.
