I've seen more and more people riding their bikes on the streets and higher bus riders than about 5 years ago. Do you just give in and pay the gas ignoring the inflated gas cost or do you adjust your life to accomodate the prices?

Here are things I've done (not implying I do these all the time):

I've been taking the bus about once a week to my afternoon class
Drive the speed limit and shift in lower RPM range (went from 25 up to 28mpg)
Friend who's family bought a home 3 mins from mine turned into a weekend carpool buddy

Take Public Transit and try finding a place closer to where you work and associate. Walking and Biking will do well in personal health and cheapness. If you do have to drive, learn to conserve gas ie. no lead foot, and do not accelerate hard and learn to conserve gas by not having the A/C on 24/7.

Take the GTO out once or twice a month only. Carpool with gf to school, don't go out as much/netflix more, etc.

I roll down the windows and have a nice sauna when I drive to save some gas. I do the no hard acceleration thing too and no lead foot. I can't really take public transportation though the public transportation thing here is horrible. Everywhere I want to go is always like 20 minutes away. :s Good thing I have a nice gas efficient car so I get good miles.

Oh and I also car pool with friends when we go out, biggrin.gif

Don't rev past 3k and shift before 3k...went from 200 per tank to 240 per tank now. Which is around 18~19mpg...

also the g can already run mid 13s stock and the hks intakes adds an estimated 10 extra hp and the exhausts add like 8 so yeah it should shove off about 1.5 to 2 sec off my times

I find that I fill up every day, and it costs me very little!

Kidding.

I don't do a goddamn thing. It's a cost of living, and not one that's easily navigated around. Run the numbers; I live close enough to work and school that I can walk and take the train, but when I used to commute, I was putting on about 10k miles a year. Average is something like 12,000.

Running the numbers with my 25 mpg-ish TSX, that's..

10,000 miles / 25 miles/gallon -> 400 gallons
A price increment of:
$1 -> $400 extra/year
$2 -> $800 extra/year

I was reading recently that $5 gas is about a 2 year horizon. I could double my driving and take $5 gas without blinking, and having the numbers ahead of time helps me plan it into my budget (FWIW, "fudge factor" on my car budget alone is $2k).

What I do right now:

1. When at home, drive my car only once a week.
2. Shift gears at the manufacturer's recommended speeds.
3. Avoid hard acceleration and hard braking, and coast along the road without pressing the pedal, especially when approaching traffic lights.
4. Follow the speed limit.
5. No street racing wink.gif [I kind of did it once against my friend for a few minutes, but the thrill was worth it w00t.gif (insert evil laugh)].
6. Currently, I have been staying out of town for several weeks, and I ride the bus to the metro station to get to downtown D.C., then walk another 10 minutes from the metro station to get to class. Advantages: exercise; save money on gas; walking instead of riding the bus also saves money (but only $1.00 per trip sad.gif). Disadvantages: must adjust schedule to the public transportation schedule (e.g., waiting for the next train or bus when I miss the previous one, which can take up to an hour at times); last night, I had to walk over a mile in the pouring rain to get home because the stupid buses do not run through my area on Sundays--I came home feeling as if I had walked through a river.

One thing I prefer not to do is carpool because I enjoy my personal time in the car. I can do whatever I want and listen to whatever I want without having to mind someone else in the car.

Stay between 2.5-3k
Coast whenever I can

Sadly I notice my MPG dropping. Whether that's mechanical or the fact that the 10% ethanol is showing it's fangs, I have yet to find out.

drive only when i need to
look for gas stations with the lowest price
car pool when going out (usually have the friend with the most efficient car drive and give him a few bucks for gas if its a long trip)
take out things not necessary in the car
keep tire pressure at recommended pressure

I haven't gone to my fav. malls since December, because it's 1.5 - 2 hrs away, around 200 miles roundtrip.
That's 30-35 bucks worth of gas T_T , one week worth of driving back and forth to work.
I do most of my shopping online, it's cheaper, because there're discounts and free shipping codes.
The shipping cost to return the items aren't that bad either, around $5-6.

Good tips, esp the tire pressure.

Also... replacing spark plugs would help.

i don't do any of these =.=;
being a uni student and working only once a week i need to dedicate half of my pay every week to petrol.
uni is 40 - 50 mins away from my house. 1.1 hrs by bus and train.
catching public transport is a pain in the rear end. i have to wake up extra early and the chances of finding parking at the train station early morning is low.
Also i have a parking permit at uni...don't want to waste it!

i guess i go out less nowadays, thats my way of coping.

the price of gas will just go up.

i remember when it was just 50 cents a litre lol..that was only like 4 years ago lol..it cost like $17 to fill up haha..now its like 50 bucks on a lil toyota.
