does my friend still have a chance to get into college? he slacked like hell last year and his final gpa for his freshman year was a 1.78. his final academic gpa was a 1.91 .... right now, he has a current gpa of 2.19 (with all report card/progress reports combined) and he feels like it's too late for him but he's doing really well this last marking period. (he has like all b's and one d) ... i guess he got his act together. does he still have a chance? i'm pretty bad too. XD

So your friend is a sophomore right now, correct?

First off most colleges don't look at freshman grades because they understand that you're new to the school and all.
Second, colleges like to see trends as it makes one seem to mature over the years and take responsibility and all that jazz.

So as long as your friend pulls off getting higher grades over the next two years, taking the most hardest classes that he can AND that interests him, he'll be fine.

tell him to work hard for the next 2 years. As much as I want to say, he still have a chance, I honestly don't know. I mean you always meet a couple of people with high gpa, but got rejected. And then theres always those few people who got super low gpa but miraculously made it in. Sometimes I don't know how college do their admissions. I mean they say this but they do another.

[This is from what I have seen]

I believe luck comes into play a lot and the two or three people that view your application. As much as they try to remain objective, I highly doubt anyone can completely get rid any form of bias they have.

Freshmen year grades aren't as important as the other three (but still important), but a 2.19 is pretty low and regardless, its on the transcript and it does say a lot. As much as the college try to cover up the fact that they don't look too much into the grades, but they do. Its a fact that they try hard to cover up with the "we look into personality and what you do to this environment," but in reality who wants an incoming student to bring down their average admittance gpa. They might accept one or two to have a diverse range of gpa, but they're not going to admit every single person with a gpa lower than a 2.8. It'll ruin the school's so called "rep."

Good luck to your friend =]

What are you talking about? I was told that freshman year is way important. When I got into high school, they actually told me that freshman year was the MOST important. I see it as showing a trend for how you're going to progress throughout the rest of high school. If you bomb freshman year and are slowly bringing stuff up, it's more like "okay.... I see getting the hang of it, but can they handle college?" Idk. If you can't handle freshman year of high school, you're pretty much screwed for the freshman year of college. But that's only my opinion.

Every year counts. I don't think they look at the year but more like the grades you make in certain classes. I mean... math and science have nothing to do with grade. You can mix those up as much as you want. And if your (or your friend's) GPA sucks, I'd say you need a kick-ass essay on your application. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just... throwing it out there. I wish him the best of luck either way though. (As an after thought, I guess it depends on what you/they want to be and what school you/they plan on going to.)

lol listen to yourself man

so lets compare two high school students

two straight As soph-senior years with mad ap classes

the first has your freshman gpa, the other has straight As

now how can you tell me that the second guy is better prepared for college just based on that

listen he has to get As and maybe some Bs only to make up for that, thats the only way

Okay first off all i just said was that most colleges don't look at freshman year. I never said that it is unimportant.

Second, honestly, how much middle schoolers soon-to-be freshmans think out their college plan immediately upon arrival of high school? Not many. First year is all about seeing what clubs or whatever suits you, getting used to your schedule/classes and all etc. Give the kids a break - they're young, just entered a new school and everything is new to them.

Third, maybe your in a competitive high school or something. Whatever, idc, but my high school never stressed A LOT on freshman year. They didn't told us it was HIGHLY important like your's did. They only had the guidance counselors enter the room, talking about the number of credits to graduate and the IDEAL high school transcript/grades one should have.
Btw I don't go to a competitive high school. I go to a public school (semi ghetto/rock/prep/skater) where there are really few people I know of that are taking tons of AP classes. Actually we only have just 13 AP classes in total. Most just take either enriched classes and some honors.

Fourth, Just because you bombed freshman year doesn't make you not able to handle college classes NOR the first year of college. What if that student went from all C's and D's in GENERAL classes to working his/her way up to A's and B's in HONORS classes over the years? And what if he/she took some AP classes too? Since AP classes are like college classes they've not only demonstrated maturity but also the abiltity to handle college work.

Just a side note btw, yes grades matter but also the type of classes too. If you got A's in all general classes then your not stepping up. However grades are just numbers; there's other factors to consider during college admissions.

i'm not sure about other schools, but the CSU (california state colleges), if you failed some classes and retake it, you don't have to put the failed grade on the college app which is a major GPA booster.

All B's and 1 D should be a 2.67 isn't it? blink.gif I'm pretty sure he still has a chance, tell him to work harder and not give up. Even if he can't get into the colleges he wants now, there's always community college and then transfer.
