I've always been very simple with my beauty routine: clense then moisturise...

but i notice that there is suppose to be another step in between which is using the toner.

what is the purpose of it?

It removes the rest of the crap that's left on your skin after you've cleansed and helps your skin return to natural shade and PH. And yeap, cleanses pores!

Hope that helps. :]

its mainly use to remove all remaining makeup left that your cleanser hasn't remover, it closes your pores and adjusts the pH level of your skin.

You don't really need toner unless you wear makeup or have really oily skin.

It's supposed to close your pores..personally, I don't feel a difference, and my aunt says splashing cold water on your face does almost the same thing.

I was wondering the same thing too. huh.gif

But I hear that warm water opens pores while cold water closes pores. Since I don't aplly makeup, guess I don't need it.

My mom told me it helps with the pores, and I've been feeling really icky about my skin lately,
so she told me to use a toner, so now I'm looking into a good one. Any recommendations?

An esthetician from Mario Badescu/Dr. Perricone (same counter at Nordstroms) told me that aside from the "common" use to use toner (close pores after cleanser), toner is the important step to restore pH balance to your skin because our skin has a natural level of acidity in it that protects it from outside elements, but cleansing strips away that natural acidity and moisturizing doesn't do much to restore it... and it takes the facial skin about 3 hours to regenerate that natural balance. So in the meantime, your skin is vulnerable for about 3 hours.

I immediately started using toner again. I would recommend L'Oreal Hydrafresh Toner. It is 99% alcohol free and contains a small amount of salicylic acid to help clear out pores. Plus, my mom uses it and it smells really yummy.

I generally use toner in place of moisturizer because I have oily/combo skin and I don't like the feeling of moisturizers on my face.
Toners, in addition to cleansing/tightening pores, help retain moisture. Water totally dries up your skin so it's good to add the extra step so your skin doesn't dry out

^ yea... pores don't "open" or "close." They stay the same size no matter what you do. For example, if you steam your face, then all the stuff comes out of your face does so because of sweat-- it doesn't open your pores at all. And every article I've read by dermatologists say toners aren't necessary at all. They don't hurt though, so I suppose it's not bad to keep using them, just a waste of money, heh.

it removes any excessive dirt on yoru pores that you did not clean when you were cleansing your face
and it's supposed to tone your skin and calms it down

I use a green tea one from the Body Shop. I don't use it every day and I don't wear make-up except for on my eyes sometimes, but it does help close up your pores and I found it made my skin less oily.

i only use it when i feel my face more oily than usual.. sorta like an astrigent, cept astrigents hurt my skin so toners work better for me
Alice asked the Cheshire Cat `Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where--" said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat.

I use toner as it clears off additional impurities in my skin that my clenser doesn't pick up.
