I have a friend, and unfortunately he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes ever since he was at least 12

the thing is, whenever we're at school i always see him buying pop and fries, and thats what he usually eats for lunch

it's so unhealthy in my opinion, or am i missing something here? Does he have a purpose of eating those things; fries (for carbs maybe o.o?) and pop (lotsa sugar?)? Or is he just being very careless of his health?
hes a teen now.

I don't know the details but prolonged uncontrolled diabetes will lead to very very serious consequences...blindness being one of them. You can try googling it
Ask your friend if he understands his condition, and suggest that he talk to a dietitian

It's really great that you care enough to worry about his health. smile.gif

Just some basic information:
It is absolutely necessary for Type 1 diabetics to take insulin everyday (usually once a day and before meals by pill or injection). Basically, their body loses the ability to produce insulin to control blood sugar levels, therefore they must measure (by themselves) the amount of insulin they need per meal/snack (by carbohydrate count) they have each day. (Type 2 Diabetics do not NEED to take insulin, although some do. Their body is still able to produce insulin, but abnormally so).

So, your friend is most likely (or i REALLY hope he is) properly adjusting his insulin dosage to amount of carbohydrates he chooses to eat. He can eat anything he likes, just like a non-diabetic, BUT he MUST have good control of his blood sugar (high blood sugar over long periods of time can cause MANY complications including but definitely not limited to dehydration, blindness, amputation, kidney disease, heart disease).
You stated the reason that you are worrying is because of his diet, which is a diet that is pretty common for a lot of people (soda and french fries).
Remember that the stuff he is eating is unhealthy for EVERYONE, which should be the reason why you worry about his diet (general health). But in the case of his being a type 1 diabetic, you should be more concerned with his blood sugar control and make sure that he is getting at least 30 minutes of exercise everyday (this could include walking too!), and that he is not skipping his medicine!

ain't he the cutest
