Tomorrow at my high school for Light Up the Night (it's like an Open House)
in the cafeteria, there is going to be a mini competition for Best Poetry Written
Each student will read their written poetry to the audience and will be ranked and judged.
I for one need this for extra credit points for my english grade (hehe) and currently, I am debating which poem I should read out loud.
I noticed that sad poems about experiences usually stick into a person's mind, so I'm thinking of reading my poem about the death of my grandfather but I really want to do a happy, quirky poem... but I want major extra credit points so my mind set is not, "Whatever makes ME happy" but instead, "Whatever gets me to the WINNING place"

so here's A: "A Grandfather's Passing"

I lost a vital figure in my life on a Thursday night.
Gee, February 27, 2007 occurred to me with such fright.
The day I lost my grandpa, I couldn't believe it.
A huge hole snared through my heart - a deep, emotional pit.

Have been told this tragedy after a delightful day in school, it wasn't at all serene.
He was alive, yes, but living on a machine.
A respirator, they called it; a tube deep down his throat to help him breath.
Arriving at the hospital, I could not bare to proceed.

You see, we had to wear protective clothing to enter.
But I didn't mind, it was just that he was in the center.
Eyes dazed and helpless, he didn't notice anyone was there
But there were people there, surrounding him everywhere.

Mom, Dad, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins - we were all waiting.
Waiting for him to pass away, was what they were all saying.
Taken off life support, what use was there to do?
But planning his funeral in the guest room was what had to be through.

Waiting, just waiting for the passing of this significant character that influenced my life with such grace and sincerity in which I jokingly called, "Old Man"
And despite my selfishness and ignorance to want him to continue living on, the final decision I hoped not for, began.
No person should suffer with a tube down his throat.
So turning off the machine was like an easy, winning vote.

B: "Poetic Feeling"

Poetry isn't my thing.
Or at least, it wasn't my zing.
But feeling obligated to do such a project that would drench my English grade with extra credit points that requires rhyming,
I found out, hey, I'm not that bad at this, so overall, perfect timing.
After jotting down a couple of sentences, frustration overwhelmed me.
But look now, after a few tries, what do you see?
Who would've thought rhyming would be so easy.
Rhyming, rhyming, rhyming - easy peasy breezy.
Who knew that rhyming comes in all different styles.
Clerihew, alliteration, couplets, odes and sonnets, all those sound so vile.
But after a whole month and a couple of days,
Hating to rhyme is probably just a phase.

Anyway, rhyming and poetry do not go hand-in-hand with me, so please do not feel the need to criticize me or make any negative, witty comments. But feel free to edit any parts you like or any tips. smile.gif
