Okay, I've been looking around this forum and i haven't found
any Psychology majors thread. I'm going on my second year
of college and I think I'm leaning towards being a psych major
now. I was also thinking sociology but I don't know?

Any experiences, tips, or what type of job field you guys might go into?

I'm also major in psychology. I just received my BA this semester and I'm planning to go to graduate school to further my education. My goal is to be a human factors psychologist.

As for tips, I would suggest to get to know the professors in the psychology department and get your foot in the door by helping professors with their research. All of it is very important for anyone who want to go to graduate school later on.

It's a lot of studying and you definitely need to go to graduate school to make the big bucks. Other than that, I think it's a real interesting subject. Though, I think there's some BS holes in it that I don't follow, but I won't get too deep into that here.

Hey, Im a Psych major in my Senior year. I would suggest you try to intern or work at a place that deals in psychology. Last semester I worked with kids who had behavioral disorders (like violent outbursts) and I definetly found out a lot about myself and what I wanted (and didnt want) to do for my career. I ended up switching majors because I was so traumatised by my working experience ( I had a chair thrown at me and one of the kids parents threatened my life) but I ended up going back because I know that I affected those kids lives and they affected mine. Its not hard to work for a hospital or any well established mental instituition, just look around and make some calls. It will definetly let you know if Psychology is the right path for you,but also remember that psychology has a lot of fields and they pay pretty well. Educational psychologists are really in demand as are industrial psychologists. I personally am going into either one of those fields because they are both challenging and rewarding (plus the $ too). Hope that helps! smile.gif

I am currently a junior majoring in psychology. After getting my B.A., I'm planning to get my PhD in developmental psych.

I second MoonChild's suggestion. But if you're only into clinical, try to snatch an internship in a clinical setting. It's very competitive at my school and the professor who's in charge of it only takes 15 students per semester and they're required to sign up 2 semesters in advance. So if you know that you're interested in clinical work rather than research, definitely go for an internship. But if you do like research, try to identify any professors in your department who are doing a study that you're interested in. Sometimes they take students who have been in their classes, but it doesn't hurt to go ask if they're taking on more research assistants.

I'm actually going to work with my advisor on her infant cognition study this fall. It seems like a lot of work already but I think it will all pay off when I get into my dream grad school, hehe.

I am planning to do Neuroscience which is basically the physical (rather than mental) portion of 'psychology.' It deals with the brain and the nervous system. I am planning on going to med school after that so ~

You have no idea what Psychology is? (Then why did you take the class~) It is more complex than you think and lots of people end up hating psychology. Originally, people believe that psychology is learning about human behavior...which is a true fact. However, through Psychology, you get much deeper into learning about mental disorders, the functions of the brain, and social functions of humans (like the stages people go through growing up, or behaviors of people in groups and what things "influence" a person). You should not have taken a course unless you are seriously interested in it, but who knows --you might like it-- smile.gif

^ yeah. I'm passion about psychology because I can connect with people when I talk to them personally. I don't really know the field but I know that I want to work with teengers, ages from 12-18. I want to be the friend that is there for them. Like building a friendship relationship besides giving them advice how to live a "better" life. I'm going on my second year in psychology.

I thought there might be more because I know a lot of people who are majoring in Psychology. however, I'm starting to debate whether I should major in psychology. I'm having trouble understanding and memorizing everything. Like I said, I love psychology with passion but I'm starting to wonder if psycology is the right major for me. I'm thinking about majoring in ICS (InterCultural Studies) and minor in Psychology instead. My school has a system that you must pass your required class with at least C or higher and I got a D- on lifespan cause the professor was hecka hard. o_o

To be honest, I really don't. I took it because I really didn't know what to take in college. But I was seriously considering taking up Theater Arts. Then I became interestted in Psychology because I saw a show about people talking about behaviours and I'm like "Aish. I think that way too!" Or something like that. I'm pretty psyched for Psych (no pun intended, lol) First day in college is 2 days away, so I'm stoked. Thanks for the advice! I think I'm gonna love Psych. Plus I already met my blockmates so I'm getting closer to loving my college. Haha.

Hi I'm also a psych major. At my school it is a capped major so I'm fighting to get the grades so I can declare my second/third year. If you don't really know much about it, then I suggest you take a general psych class and see how you like it. I know it might be a lot of memorization but I think in a way it also triggers your thinking. A lot of the materials in psych is based on theories anyway, so you should take time to critically think about it and perhaps challenge it. Do your own experiments and observations even. Good luck! :]

bittersweet.
I don't want you, but I need you.
I love you and hate you at the very same time.

I'm lucky enough to have professors who clearly said: "I don't want you to memorize. I want you to understand." Which is hard, but hey. It's easier than having to memorize a lot of things. I'm taking up some general classes, and my mom told me that by the time I'm in my 2nd or 3rd year, it'll be when I start talking "Psych-y". I'm planning to shift anyway, but after reading the comments before me, I think I would want to try pursuing a Psych Major for me to talk to people who need my help or advice.

I'm going to be a junior in Psychology. After I graduate I'm going to get my masters either in Animation or 'social services'??[my teacher said I should if I wanted to be a clinical psych].

I have a question after you major in psych you can masters in anything you want right? If I want to be a Family, Marriage, and Relationship councilor.

^ Umm, I think it levels in your degree. If you're in bachelor, you'll likely to have the counseling jobs, etc.. but if you have a master or PH.D. degree, then you be a marriage, family, and relationship counselor. I don't know though...

anyways, i'm thinking that i'll stick with psychology for now. smile.gif i can minor in ICS. XD

my psych prof said if i get a masters in social services I can be a Family, Marriage, and Relationship counselor.

but I was wondering...if...
revised question: "if I have a B.A. psych I can get my M.D in anything I want right? If I want to be a Family, Marriage, and Relationship councilor."
I mean get an M.D that doesn't relate to psychology at all and it doesn't relate to being a counselor.
