My friends and I have been debating over this for a long time. So, I decided to come and ask you guys:

Who would be a better candidate for college?

A person who is at the top of their class, at a not so good high school, where students aren't particulary smart
OR
A person who is average, at really good high school, where students are extremeley competitive?

I said that the average person who goes to the good, competitive high school would be a better candidate because they are being pushed to do better as opposed to going to a school full of stupid people where they don't have to try as hard.

Your thoughts?

In my opinion, being top of your class only because your high school is not elite and the students aren't that diligent doesn't cut it. They don't try hard at all as oppose to the latter who is engaged in the competition of being top in the school. It doesn't make that person "special" in any way other than being top of the class.

The latter, who may or may not be ranked top 10, showed determination and hard work even though he/she did not make the top 10, it is still an accomplishment to be even be in par with the rest of the hard-working students.

College admission officers take into account how prestigious your high school is too.
