I have a paper to write about why people migrate and how has their identity changed due to migration.

It will be good help if you can dig a little bit of info about your ancestors lol and tell me abit about how you are now in this generation so that can give me an overall idea of how Asian migration is like in the US.

But if it's just you who moved at the age of 20, ignore the second part. lol.

1. Yourself.

Name:
Age:
Ethnicity:
Generation: (since the first family descendant that reached the US)
At what age did you arrive in the US?
The current situation now:
Are you more inclined to your ethnic culture or American culture or a mix of both? Describe your identity:
What do you and your family do for a living?
For you, where is your 'home'? - The US or your homeland?

*if you are the one who moved to the US
When did you move and why.
How was the initial experience for you?
How has migrating affect you the way you are?
Are you planning to return back to your homeland?

2. Your family member who first moved to the US.

Why did he/she choose to migrate?
When did he/she migrate?
Did he choose to stay initially or had to because he couldn't go back? Why did he choose to stay?
History? : (eg: profession, wages, time frame, Journey- where did he first reach, which crisis/war/treaty?)
His idea of home: (do they still long for home despite migrating. or are they happier here?).

Thx a mill for the input. It'll be great help smile.gif

1. Yourself.

Name: Lar Vang
Age: 27
Ethnicity: Hmong
Generation: My parents immigrated here, so I'm the first generation.
At what age did you arrive in the US?: I was born here.
The current situation now: I'm not sure what you're asking for, living status? I'm living by myself with my younger brother since we're both going to the same university.
Are you more inclined to your ethnic culture or American culture or a mix of both? Describe your identity: I think those who are born in the USA are more Americanized. I'm more fluent in English than in my native language. I can speak Hmong, but I can't really read or write in it. I also have a hard time communicating in Hmong with my parents or the older generation. I know the traditions of my culture, but I don't know them that well, if this makes any sense at all. Sometimes I'm embarrassed of how limited my knowledge is of in my own culture. I'm more inclined to the American culture.
What do you and your family do for a living? I'm a student and I work. My parents both work in paper companies. Two of my brothers go to universities, while my other brother goes to a tech college, and my sister is a graduate student.
For you, where is your 'home'? - The US or your homeland? Since I was born here, I consider the US my home, but my parents will always say that Laos is their home.

*if you are the one who moved to the US
When did you move and why.
How was the initial experience for you?
How has migrating affect you the way you are?
Are you planning to return back to your homeland?

2. Your family member who first moved to the US.

Why did he/she choose to migrate? To give their children a better life and to escape persecution and Communism in Laos.
When did he/she migrate? My parents came to the US in the mid-1970's.
Did he choose to stay initially or had to because he couldn't go back? Why did he choose to stay? They chose to stay because there was more freedom here and the standard of living was better here.
History? : (eg: profession, wages, time frame, Journey- where did he first reach, which crisis/war/treaty?) The crisis would be the The Secret War with the US. The CIA recruited many Hmong men to help block the Ho Chi Ming Trail, the main military route from the north to the south, which was led by General Vang Pao. After the Communists overthrew the Lao government in the mid-1970's, my parents and their families escaped persecution and crossed the Mekong River to Thailand and eventually came to the USA. They left Thailand, then landed in Seattle, Washington, and then flew to Chicago, Illinois, and then came to Appleton, Wisconsin because some of their relatives were already living there. My dad was a student and my mom was a farmer. They were both still teenagers when they left Laos.
His idea of home: (do they still long for home despite migrating. or are they happier here?). They often talk about returning back to their country, but I think they're happier here.

When did he/she migrate? June 1978
Did he choose to stay initially or had to because he couldn't go back? Why did he choose to stay? Wanted to stay because it was better here than there.
History? : (eg: profession, wages, time frame, Journey- where did he first reach, which crisis/war/treaty?) Mother - Stay at home mom tongue.gif, Father - Captured by the Khmer Rouge, was scheduled for execution but fled to Thailand with my mom. Basically the Khmer Rouge was a bunch of ruthless people who killed anybody they felt like it.

Wiki piki time
'Following their leader Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge imposed an extreme form of social engineering on Cambodian society—a radical form of agrarian communism where the whole population had to work in collective farms or forced labor projects. In terms of the number of people killed as a proportion of the population (est. 7.5 million people, as of 1975), it was one of the most lethal regimes of the 20th century. One of their mottos, in reference to the New People, was: "To keep you is no benefit. To destroy you is no loss."'

His idea of home: (do they still long for home despite migrating. or are they happier here?). A place where they can be happy with their family, knowing that everybody is safe.

Name: Kathrine
Age: 17
Ethnicity: Filipino
Generation: (since the first family descendant that reached the US) Umm.. I'm not sure about what generation I am.. I mean, my grandpa came here to work in the sugar plantations and brought my grandma who brought my mom and in turn brought my sister and I. So...uh..I'm not sure..none of us were born here. blink.gif I'll let you decide on that one.

At what age did you arrive in the US?: 5yo
The current situation now: Um..(this question is a little vague) I'm still living here. happy.gif
Are you more inclined to your ethnic culture or American culture or a mix of both? Describe your identity: Well, since I came here at such a young age, I was automatically assimilated meaning I took the American Culture in. I could no longer speak tagalog and I only spoke english. Our family is not so traditional anymore since we were "Americanized". However, we still eat filipino food and some filipino traditions.
What do you and your family do for a living?: Both my mom and sister are nurses (Duh, typical Filipino job)
For you, where is your 'home'? - The US or your homeland?: Hawaii, USA

*if you are the one who moved to the US
When did you move and why: I moved in the year of 1995
How was the initial experience for you?: I don't really remember but judging by the pictures it looked like I had fun. However, when I started kindergarten I couldn't speak english so it was traumatizing for me.
How has migrating affect you the way you are? : I can no longer speak my native language, and I think I am more lazy since US is so modernized. Back in the philippines, everything was valuable. I think living in the US made us into lazy people.

Are you planning to return back to your homeland?: Yes but only for a vacation

2. Your family member who first moved to the US.

Why did he/she choose to migrate? My grandfather believed that the better life was in the US.
When did he/she migrate? I'm not too sure but I think it was in the 1970s or 80s.
Did he choose to stay initially or had to because he couldn't go back? Why did he choose to stay? He didn't stay, he just stayed to make money and go back home. He eventually came home to the PI.

History? :
(eg: profession, wages, time frame, Journey- where did he first reach, which crisis/war/treaty?) Uhh, my grandpa was a plantation worker.
His idea of home: (do they still long for home despite migrating. or are they happier here?) I wouldn't know, he passed away before I was born mellow.gif

if it's too late to do this... oh well. XD;;

1. Yourself.

Name: raishel
Age: seventeen
Ethnicity: filipina, but some irish spanish, chinese, and japanese.
Generation: my parents both moved to canada; my mother moved there when she was an adolescent, but my father moved there close to his twenties, i think. i was born in canada, then moved to the us. does that make me second gen?
At what age did you arrive in the US?: i was born in canada, but moved to the US around one year of age.
The current situation now: um... still living in the same state an everything?
Are you more inclined to your ethnic culture or American culture or a mix of both? Describe your identity: strangely, i never thought of myself as asian until highschool. i've been made fun of it a lot in life, but i was never really effected by it until people went through puberty and shot those "ooh, asian girl" comments at me. xD;; honestly, i didn't notice, aside from the the food at home being different and my parent/relatives speaking tagalog. also, there were some other traditions and stereotypes that we fit into... but i didn't notice. i actually have more asian friends and always have, except during middle school when i was the only asian... but hung out with the japanophiles. [ i didn't realize at the time. ] i guess... i like my "ethnic" culture better, but the lines between them are certainly blurred.
What do you and your family do for a living?: my mom is a nurse manager. ooh, filipina. XD and my dad is a construction worker.
For you, where is your 'home'? - The US or your homeland? : the US, i guess. but since i visited canada a lot when i was younger, i feel like i'm attatched to there...

*if you are the one who moved to the US
When did you move and why.
How was the initial experience for you?
How has migrating affect you the way you are?
Are you planning to return back to your homeland?

2. Your family member who first moved to the US.

Why did he/she choose to migrate?: money, i think. for my dad? curiosity?
When did he/she migrate? : my mom when she was eight or something. my dad was a young adult.
Did he choose to stay initially or had to because he couldn't go back? Why did he choose to stay?: they chose to stay. they prefer the goverment here since it's not so "corrupt" and the fact that it's safer. but they do want to go back.
History? : (eg: profession, wages, time frame, Journey- where did he first reach, which crisis/war/treaty?): i dont' know. XD
His idea of home: (do they still long for home despite migrating. or are they happier here?): they're happier here. my mother identifies herself as a canadian, and she considers canada her home. she's entirely assimilated, i think... aside from her ideals of being a perfect student, a nurse, and a cook. XD!
