Yeahhh, so I am like almost done with sophmore year.
Overall i think my accumlative average is going to be a 90

i am kinda sad because on a GPA scale thats a 3.6 or soemthing?

I know that freshman year doesnt matter much when it comes to college because you are just adjusting but what about sophomore year?
I know junior is like the year you totally have to kick butt in. oh man...

Well, I'm not sure about where you live or anything like that
but--In california; the grades you receive on STAR (state testings) go on your transcripts now.
Which means ALL years of highschool may..kind of count.
Since this has been implimented just recently, I have no idea how colleges weigh these scores.
However, we should still try our best on state testings anyways?
After all, this is what the schools wanted. To raise the testing scores. =/

Sophomore is indeed important.
You can start volunteering early, getting involved in various extra curricular activites
to show on your transcript for colleges and so on.
The grades do count. They average the GPA of your sophomore and junior year.
But GPA isn't the only thing they look at (as you probably know) ^^

A 3.6 is good. ^^
Thats between Bs and As!

My range is 4.0 (not counting the ap classes that boost up my GPA)
Luckily my freshman years' gpq won't count. 3.9 average that year.

Best of luck!

I'm also a sophomore in Highschool.
Can't believe I'm going to be a Junior soon...
Heard it was the "hardest year in highschool" ><;;

Yes, Sophomore year counts. But don't worry 3.6 is a good start! What colleges will really love is if your GPA in junior year goes up and you take AP courses next year so make sure you work hard and keep up your grades Junior year! Also in Senior year, do not slack off and continue to take the same amount or hard courses or even more if you really feel up to the challenge. Colleges hate slackers! I slacked off like crazy my Senior year. I went from 3 AP courses my Junior year to none my Senior year and I didn't get into really good schools like UCs sleep.gif;; But a 3.6 can still get you into many schools actually, and if you work hard it will definitely go up. ^^

um pretty much everything counts in highschool until your last semester of senior year.
even then, you cant slack off.

but thats a good start. keep it up!

definitely. sophomore year and junior year are what most colleges tend to look at. i have a lot of friends who kicked my butt junior year but were slackers in sophomore year so i beat them in ranking. your ranking is pretty good, just keep your grades up and take more challenging classes next year. happy.gif

Sophomore year is less important than junior year, but still very important.

It's a really good start you have. Remember colleges love seeing upward trends, so as long as you improve and challenge yourself, you'll be in a great position to succeed

sophomore year and junior year are the most important years, especially if you're applying for Cal grants

Zonkey, speaking of Cal Grants...
Do you know when is the time to apply for them?
And any other college scholarships?

You can definitely raise your GPA, don't worry!

Unfortunately, all your years count. Senior year you just want to pass, basically.

Whatever is submitted to your transcript is purely on behalf of whichever school you attend. My counselors always state otherwise about STAR testing, unless they're trying to keep overachieving kids from hyperventilating. x_x

+GPA usually increases during Junior Year b/c all the B's and A's in honors classes are finally getting weighted in AP's. In a sense, my GPA increased significantly from sophomore year (3.6 average) and junior year (4.34 now). That is, with a same number of AP classes to my Honors classes last year. ;D

STAR testing counts? er.. not quite I believe.

I guess the only thing STAR testing is good for is for your school. Let's say they have a kid with same GPA as you, good ranking--same as you, do as well on SAT's--same as you and theyre deciding on which one they should take?
Then this is where they look at your star testing scores.. Your school's API right?
But I dont think Star testing is even important @_@

yes they do.
colleges add up the cumulative gpa from sophomore year & junior year.
and yeah, STAR testing scores go on official transcripts now but colleges don't ask for that in the applications anyway~

Soo... a question ? im finishing up freshman year.. and i think i did ok.. sad.gif
I have a 4.5 GPA now and 4.0 GPA when i began hs, (its out of 5).
So freshman year doesnt really count ? For class ranking, do they add up all your year's GPA ?

Why cry? I'm a stronger girl now because of you. So, why cry?

At my school, all four years count. The counselors always told us that freshman year didn't count because we're still adjusting to high school.
Well...it's not entirely true. Freshmen year messed up my GPA. I wish I didn't listen to the counselor. =/
I would take every single school year seriously.

Personally I think every year counts. Now that I think I'm finished with sophomore year. I have to double check but I think you should treat every year as it's very important because every year I think is. On edit I'm in college but having gone through high school EVERY year is very important.

Freshman year does count... to an extent.
If you're applying to UC's, they take a deeper look in your sophomore and junior years.
And I believe they do add up all your year's GPA, if I'm not mistaken.
(Feel free to correct me, anyone.)

Exactly what I'm thinking. Just because people say that your "junior year" is the hardest year, you don't have to overlook your first two years of high school. Your grades will stick with you for the next four years, and you want to make the best impression on colleges as much as you can. You don't think they're important now, but wait until you get close to your senior year when you start applying for perspective colleges and universities.

I messed up just a little in my sophomore year and that costed me a good chunk off of my GPA. I could have been at a 4.0 if I had applied myself, but now I'm down to a 3.6 GPA. It's not bad, but I know I could have done better if I applied myself more my sophomore year.

wow. you did really good. Ranking wise, its cumulative. i wish i would have known about that when i was a freshmen. man i messed up bad. i bought my GPA down to like a 3.6, and then this year, I only got one B, and bought it back up to a 3.8...but im kinda scared for this semester. i think i might have 3 B's. which would bring the total amount of B's i've had to 10....

Freshman year only counts in maintaining your GPA, but sophomore and junior year are definitely the two that colleges focus on the most.
