So I'm planning on buying a new camera and I'm curious on which kind of zoom is better optical or digital? I've seen cameras with 3x optical zoom but 5x digital and cameras with 5x optical and 2x digital. So overall which kind of zoom is better or is it the overall zoom?

Optical zoom is the only thing that matters.

yeah, go for the optical. the only time I'd use digital is if I'm desperate for some far off shot but it'll still come out looking like trash

What's the difference of Optical and Digital?
Optical zoom is when the camera lens actually zooms in. It extends outwards to get a close up photo. Whereas digital zoom is only magnifying the image on your screen. It's like using photoshop ans zooming in then cropping that out.
Optical zoom = Good photo quality as it actually zooms in
Digital zoom = Might be bad as it jst zooms in digitally. The only time i would say digital zoom is better then optical zoom is when your camera has a high mexgapixel. Therefore the image is already in high resolution, so when you zoom in, the quality is still good.
Booh. :)
