basically any external hard drive will work.
your files will retain the quality if you're moving from one drive to another.
burning it on to discs however, may cause you to lose quality

i use this brand called TREKSTOR. its noiseless. it doesnt use a fan and uses cast aluminum metal as a heat sink (yes, that makes it very heavy), but its very quiet

since you are buying a hard drive to move your entire computer...you need one that can at least fit all the stuff you have on your computer. typically it would be less than what it says is taken up in your C drive..because alot of it goes to installed programs, and formatting, and possibly even fragmented bits. i recommend you buy one that has large storage capacity. because you never know when it will come useful.

my external hard drive is 500gb..i bought it for 100 canadian dollars during boxing day LOL.

when you do use the hard drive, try not to leave it on for hours at a time....it causes less wear on the hard drive for obvious reasons.
when you do buy the hard drive, make sure its connecting cables have one that can connect to your computer (USB of any sort, the higher the number the better)

since electronics are likely to be imported into country...it may be designed for a different power rating...make sure you have an adapter before using one, or you will risk damaging your hard drive

I have a WD external hardrive.
It's fine and dandy but I once lost everything in it......... !@()#!)@$*123 because I left it on and connected to my laptop when my laptop was upgrading something and it made my hardrive mess up, so I had to delete everything off of it in order for it to work.
But besides that stupid mistake, the WD is nice.
I use it to hold music, photos, and videos too. smile.gif

I have a sony, maxtor and WD one.
They're quite good, but mine are actually internal drives and bought a casing for it.

I'm also looking for a good external hard drive but there's too many to choose from!
Some brands I don't even know so I'd like to know which one is worth it for a price.

I'm looking for at least a 500GB that's about $100-$150.
(Am I too cheap?)

You can get a 500gb for as little as $90 and 750gb for about $130
check out slickdeals, fatwallet, or techbargains all good sites for finding good deals

I'm also trying to buy an external hard drive to save my videos and music.

I heard about WD and Maxtor. Any more recommendation/details about WD?

Thanks for voicing your opinions people!
