I really want to do film also! But I don't know the chances of making it in to the industry. I heard its pretty hard to find a job no matter what film school you went to.

I currently do editing, I've edited lot of school projects and released couple sports highlights on youtube.. haha everyone starts somewhere.

My only word on this is that you'll probably hate your time in the film department. You're better off going out there doing your own thing and just become a straight up independent filmmaker as you'll gain so much more experience than sitting in a class for several hours learning useless theories making useless films.

And yeah, zizou, it is hard to try and make it in the industry, but trust me when I say that you'll fair better making short indy movies and building up from there. You can easily post your films on several forums and get actual critiques from those that are in the same position as you are. Plus you can easily gain an international fanbase that way.

Depends on what kind of person you are. There are some people that can just pop out of HS and start making movies. Others prefer the academic route. And if all else fails, you'll still have a college degree (contrary to common belief, for alot of jobs, one degree is as good as another.)

PS: Look next time, there's a topic on this already.
honestly... you're not half as special as you think you are.

film classes helped a lot for me

its true there are some people in the class who think they know what they are doing, get bored with the assignments in class and want to create these elaborate 15 minute pieces when the assignment only calls for 3-5 minute films. usually these kids are very raw and they need classes like these to sharpen up the edges a bit. there were some kids in my film classes that were way too stubborn and complained a lot but they were better prepared than the rest of us.

baby steps are fine, you might want to dive right in to the meat of things but Intro to Film and Intro to Film II are crucial. First off, you learn proper editing techniques, secondly, you can learn from your peers and lastly, a lot of the assignments the professor gives out, especially in Film II, will be stuff you would never ever think about doing such as creating a 5-10 minute documentary.

Hahah, I actually have heard of a LOT of cases where people are bored and think they know what they're doing...but more in the theater department. You see, my cousin and I are filmmakers and he tried going the film department route but realized that he's basically being taught stuff that he already knew and that it was less hands-on than what he thought it would be so instead he's just majoring in theater since he likes to act. But he tells me several stories that the people in the theater department are more pretentious than filmstudents ahah.

I think film-making would be awesome. I love Wong Fu Productions!
They were a group of three college students who made plenty of shorts and stuff. As they kept making new shorts, you can definitely tell how much they have improved. Most of the recent shorts are entertaining and meaningful and they had even produced their own independent movie, which they toured around US and Canadian colleges to show to students.

You should check them out; they post their stuff on youtube. Personally film-making would be fun, but I doubt I would ever make a career out of it. I am not just not that good, however, if one day I decide to make some video, I am sure I'll have fun with it.

first of all, i'm a champion of higher education in general, even if you don't major in film you can still make films and be in the industry while working on your degree. but it's important for me to say that going to film school doesn't exclude you from going into the industry and getting your feet wet right away. a lot of my friends make short and feature films both as part of class and outside of class that got into sundance, cannes, and other major festivals. we also study the history and theory of filmmaking, which obviously you can learn without going to film school, but like someone mentioned, some people thrive in a more academic setting. you can gain knowledge, experience, network (i.e. free crew), and, most importantly, student funding so you don't have to fork out as much to build your portfolio. i can't even begin to describe how much my school has helped me financially--all those sets i was able to design and build with all kinds of equipment, i couldn't have done outside of school.

secondly, it depends on what you wanna do in film. some people want to be feature film directors and nothing else, and that's a tough, competitive career choice. others just want to shoot or edit whatever, films, commercials, and that's less competitive. some people just love being on set and working on films, and they're fine being gaffers or propmasters, and that's obviously even less competitive. if you're not sure what part of filmmaking you want to do in the end, being in film school can help figure that out. it can also help you realize that you don't wanna do film after all, which happened to some of my friends.

thirdly, if you've already made up your mind and are just looking for other film students to commiserate with, we have a whole thread on this topic http://www.soompi.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=102958. it's been kind of inactive since may, mostly because it's summer and people are probably on vacation (aj, fel, and others, if you read this, we need to start it up again!) but you can probably read the earlier posts and help us get it going on again.
