Is clutch braking and engine braking the same thing?

clutch braking-when you downshift a gear and slowly let go of the clutch pedal to make the car go slower.

ya it'll cost you more in the long run. replacing brake pads = cheaper than replacing a clutch.

u brake better (shorter distance) when u use both engine braking and pedal braking.

Taking your hand off the gas while in gear and letting the engine slow down your speed is engine breaking.

IMO, pull in the clutch and brake. Pads are cheaper than trannys.

phantompc4 thats not true... the most efficient braking is when the tires are just about to slide (aka ABS)

just because the abs engages doesnt mean u get the shortest distance possible. All abs does is prevent your wheels from locking. If you engine break + regular brake you get a shorter distance than if you just relied on foot pedal braking alone no matter abs.

I thought they do BOTH.

Prevent Sliding and locking.

when u brake and u dont have abs the wheels lock, snice the wheels lock and the force is still going forward you slide.

Apparently all we're both doing is stating the obvious and repeating what each other said.

Never heard of clutch braking. Slowly letting go of the clutch to use the engine brake would wear out your clutch no?
I heel & toe everywhere all the time or rev-match when I get lazy.

lols we got some professionals here

anyways this clutch braking gota be the last thing u should be thinking about. hmm but emergency brake to avoid collision maybe.. if u had enough time to think and execute it.

dude, it doesnt matter if its engine brake or pedal brake, or both. youll only be able to get the shortest distance if your TIRES lets you do it. and an ABS is the most efficient on that. ITS SCIENCE FACT, its not made-up by me...

"when u brake and u dont have abs the wheels lock, snice the wheels lock and the force is still going forward you slide." you can still make a "normal brake" work like an ABS. it depends only on your skills

^ true that brothhaa i also find this clutch/engine braking thing to be completely whack and unnecessary for practical use. execution time seems way too long for emergency uses.

if anything id much rather perform some kind of pedal+parking brake combo over any pedal+engine brake move anyday.

Engine breaking is just as simple as keeping the car in gear(and braking).....thats all the OP is asking...

versus clutch in, and breaking.

...you use it on the track or twisties so u can brake better, cuz u know last time i checked braking better = better track times

^yess sirr boss of course i mentioned no practical use yeah? i meant as in normal daily driving

TyneeTom no way that simply braking in gear is engine braking because that wouldnt make sense at all
that is unless ur gonna brake in gear until u stall..? err..
well i figured if u were to downshift to slow down that would stop forces directly to the drivetrain,
so naming that enginebraking would make much more sense.

back to the main topic clutchbraking=enginebraking
if clutchbraking means youre shifting to a different gear to decelerate then yes
but if clutchbraking means u apply clutch to hit the brakes then no clutch braking and engine braking are not the same. but thatd be stupid who names a move for something like that?
