If it's a bunch of people i'd say cook pasta since it's cheap and you can make a lot.
I like to make spinach and beef lasagna and have some bread and salad with it.
I've also made huge pots of chili (extra spicy) and served it with rice or bread
or tacos! you can have a DIY toppings bar. I always have taco night with my roomies. It's fun and cheap.
If it's only a few people and you want something fancier, I'd go with steak or salmon with some potatoes and veggies as sides.

garlic bread - super easy & quick! but if I have my best friend (who hates
pasta) & those that don't like pasta then I try to make steak & mashed potato
or salmon & string beans with rice - but that's if I don't have a lot of people
over (it's pretty expensive). haha.
or
don't even cook for them (yeep, I said it). set out ingredients & make everyone
design their own pizza! then they get what they want & it'll be easier on you, &
you guys can have fun while you're at it. hahaha.

Use Alton Brown's recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-b...cipe/index.html SOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than normal marinara sauce or something. Really complex and tastes like tomatoes! Also it doesn't have meat if you have any vegan/vegetarian friends of course if you did I would assume you have said something... but anyways, I like adding mushrooms and ground beef to it.
SPAGHETTI SHOULD BE AL DENTE!!! AL DENTEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
