Breaking In A New Engine Which is the best way?

Sup, I'm curious.

Most new car manuals will say to keep your car under XXXX RPM for the first 600 miles to break in the engine and let the piston rings seat properly and etc.

One of my friends suggests the best way to break in an engine is to beat the mini cooper out of it for the first 600 miles to get all the little bits and pieces of metal out of the engine.

Anyone have their opinion/facts to share?

Beating the crap out of the first 600 miles is something you're not suppose to do.

I dont think your friend knows too much about cars.

Even though the new engines now a days are suppose to be tested and really dont need breaking in, beating the crap out of it in the first 600 miles will do more harm than bad.

and isnt 600 miles a bit short? Usually its the first 5000-6000 miles.

So... is it to beat or not to beat?

^ hahaha sorry.. i have a dirty mind..

yeah .. but in this case beating.. not good

from what ive heard from oppas who work at car repair.. shop things.. they say that if you beat the crap out of ur engine.. ur screwed.. long run and short run. besides if i had a new new car i'd baby it like crazy anyway..

I never worry about the break in period for new cars. even with built and oem rebuilt motors... There's no break in period. the car goes on the dyno for 30+ hard pulls after the first initial startup

also the g can already run mid 13s stock and the hks intakes adds an estimated 10 extra hp and the exhausts add like 8 so yeah it should shove off about 1.5 to 2 sec off my times

I would play it safe and drive it carefully for the first 2-3k miles, and then get my oil changed.

yea i saw a video before of a bmw e46 the whole building process, and after they checked everything, they did pulls on the dyno a couple times, drove it on a course to make sure everything works and then loaded it up on the truck. same thing went for Porsche too.

but. If i got a new car, i'd still take it easy on the car until the first oil change, and even after i'd still take it easy unless i need to push it a little.

Here's the thing. @ boost

I remember reading in an AutoWeek magazine they were testing out the new EVO....(EVO 9)back then.

The guys in the magazine said the manual claimed if you treat it nicely the first 600 miles then you will be treated to a engine with no lame problems. (leaks and etc)

So they treated it nicely for the first 600 miles.

And then....

they had like a quarter mile time of.....I don't remember the exact time. of like 13.3 seconds or something.

And after 30k miles they did it again and they got a quarter mile time of 13.4 seconds.

And then after 60k miles they did it again and they got quarter mile of 13.4 seconds

and then at 100k they got a quarter mile of 13.5 or something like that.

And then I think they had another evo 9 that they beat the crap out of right out of the factory, and it started having oil leaks or something at 20k miles(some small number)

I don't know, I don't remember the article exactly.

My friend is pretty knowledgable about cars. Yes, I know in our autoshop classes we're taught by the textbook that there is a "break-in" period.

But I'm just here trying to confirm facts.....

So yeah....it does sound pretty unorthodox to beat the crap out of your enginef or the first 600 miles. But I dunno.

I guess its almost impossible to tell, unless if we have mythbusters test it out for us....yeah?

Thanks for all your inputs though

Just take it easy for the 1st 1000 miles or so keeping RPM at or around 3k at most. Drive it like a baby at first. You gotta crawl before you walk and walk before you go zoom zooom (:

I understand your need to confirm this. There are a lot of auto myths out there. Another one that really baffled me for a while was when people said once you go synthetic, you can never go back... which is false. I've heard this multiple times from various people throughout my life. So it is good to hear from many people to get the right answer by asking in a forum.

Yeah, my message to boost wasn't to insult him or disprove him or anything

I am only just trying to pull all of the answers that are out there.

High or Low RPM ? thats the question! Whatever is the answer never Rev up too much until the engine have a proper temperature, oil reached all system, etc...

i think u should do as the manual says. until piston rings are properly seated, reving up too much will cause unexpected damage.. its like carving a sculpture: would you rather polish slowly to get a perfect surface or use a saw to get it done faster?
