I cannot swim! But I'd sure take a shot at saving him.
Even if in the end, it ends up with both of us needing to be rescued. ¬¬

After all, I rather use an equipment to try to save him/her, rather than jumping in and trying to save them, and only have them bring me down, too.
There was one time where I remember I couldn't stay in the water well and the teacher just stood there in the pool in front of me as she watched me struggle.
Not a cool experience at all, and I don't think it will be cool to see someone flip out when somebody is capable of saving them nearby (or to find help).

If it's in a river...I would find something for him to grab since the current is strong and dangerous.

A kid was drowning during PE in the pool and no one immediately went in to save him.
Not the teacher, who was instructing the swimming class.
Who did? One of my friends, who dove in and got him out.
But hm. I know how to swim so I think I would. Unless the kid looked heavier than me (I'm only 90 pounds) and I'm pretty weaksauce... so yeah. Depends if I know I can or not. If not, I'll go screaming for help lol. Maybe try and find something I can toss to the kid. Like a teddy bear for comfort.
Jk.
