I'm not a lifeguard but I received a formation at a camp when I was a counselor on how to save someone from drowning. So I would help the kid.

That reminds me, one time, we went to the pool with my two best friends in elementery school and one of them didn't tell us she couldn't swim! So we were having fun and decided to go the in the deep water area and she started drowning. I was only 9 so I was really scared but I went next to her and her instinctive reaction was to use me to push herself up and I ended up almost drowning (what was the lifeguard doing, god knows) until an old lady came to our rescue.

So my recommendation is; if you don't know how to do it, get help because youmight drowned as well. A person who is drowning is panicking so he/she will to anything for air. If you are alone, try to find something that the kid could grab like a stick, a rope... anything.

OMG YOU TRIED TO SAVE HER AND SHE USED YOU TO PUSH HERSELF UP?! wow... what kind of best friend is that!!!

Of course I would try to save him! whether jumping in or using objects around me!

I dont think I could stand myself If I let a kid drown because I was "to scared"

or "I was to worried about myself".

god it makes me sick thinking about being in a situation like that,

I pray that I never am put in that kind of situation! unsure.gif

I'm not really good at reacting fast.
I'd probably stand there for 5 seconds stunned.
I hope that I'd have the courage to jump in and save him... but I don't know if that exists in me.

I wouldn't even be able to save myself. How depressing.

Even though I know how to swim, I would probably call for help, cause if I did help him and tried giving him CPR and the kid got brain damage from not having oxygen for a period of time, you can get sued by the parents for that.

I honestly can't swim! I can do basic things like floating and stuff but I pretty much can't do anything more than that! I'd rather call for help because it'd be worse if I tried to go and save him and we ended up having two people drowning and yelling for help.

Well it's a normal reaction; afterall she was fighting for her life; I didn't know how to help her or calm her and since she was panicking, she also didn't know it was me... she didn't even realize I was someone. It was just instinctive: she had to push herlself to get some air.

Anyone who is drowning will react that way, that's why not just anyone just save someone from drowning =(

I would, if I were a good swimmer.

I'd probably drown before I'd even get to the kid.

I would first yell "HELP!"
If no one is around, I'll take my chances and try to save the kid.
I might die as well, since I can't swim! D<

I've actually semi-what saved two kids before. I don't know if you would count it as saving but...I guess I personally would? I can't swim for my life honestly and I'm only 5'2 so whenever I do go into the pool, I stay where I know that I'm safe.

Anyways just a few months ago I was in a pool with my cousins and playing around when my 12 year old cousin told me that these kids needs help. I was like "what?" and then I look over and see these two kids around 5-6 in the 5ft area. Both of them were crying out for help and really trying hard so that their heads didn't go under water. Honestly I panicked too because they were more towards the 6ft area and I myself couldn't swim but I walked up to them and was on my tippy-toes. I picked the little boy up and handed him to my 12 year old cousin and then went to to girl. She was further away and I couldn't go much further just being on my tippy-toes so I reached over and grabbed her wrist pulling her towards me as quickly as possible before lifting her out of the water too.

What bothered me the most was their mom though. It was pool rules that an adult must be in the pool with children under a certain age and I'm sure they both were only between 5-6. What would have happened if no one was there?

Ideally, I would. Realistically, i wouldn't have the strength or ability. Maybe if I really wouldn't be able to take the guilt, I'd at least try.

I'm bad at swimming, but my first reaction would be to jump in and save the kid. I've done silly things like that before, too.

I'd rescue the kid even if there were people around.
I'm not gonna let the bystander effect bring along death lol

I would look for someone to save him because like the original poster, I can't swim either... at all. If I can't swim to save my own life then there's no point for me to attempt saving someone else's. we'll both end up dying.

I would call for help...I don't know how to swim so if I did I would definitely save the kid.

aren't there like lifesavers in every pool? it would take too long to call someone to help
o.o i would use that.. but then i can swim i just can't save someone

i tried once (it was practice) but i was not strong enough to pull the person out of the water

If I didn't know how to swim, of course I wouldn't save him or else we'd both be dead, but since I do know how to swim and I'm pretty good at it, I would save him. Someone saved me from drowning once and that's why I'm here today, I know what he would be going through.
