So I'm going to be tutoring this summer and they asked me to name a price, but I have no idea what to say! D: I was wondering if you guys can help me out?

Basic Information:
-I'll be tutoring a student who's going into 12th grade
-I'm an incoming college freshman
-I'm tutoring mostly calculus but maybe a little bit of physics
-I'll be driving to her house (its only about 10 minutes away)
-It will probably be an hourly rate, 2-3 hours a day for 2-3 days a week

Thanks in advance!

$25-30 an hour, esp since you're driving to their place. gas isn't cheap nowadays sleep.gif;

once you actually have a year or two of college under your belt you can charge more ^^

My friend gets tutored for math and she has to pay about $400 every month. Her tutor is some famous asian guy who got his students into Harvard and Yale though. So I guess you should ask for about $250-$300 every month.

Haha wow really? I was thinking like 12 an hour xD;
Because I used to tutor her in chem during the school year for 10 an hour~
Do you think it would be too weird to raise the price by that much? D:

I got $12/hour for tutoring a class of third graders with three other tutors

idk, I'm the same age as you, and I'm being offered $20/hour to tutor some sophomore in TOEFL-level English

ok let's just put it this way

if you were only charging $10 an hour, that's ridiculously underpaid

right now i charge my students $30 an hour for english tutoring, but they come to my apartment (we all live in the same university-owned building).

my mom paid my math tutor 40 an hour, if that helps.
she got a perfect score in that section and she goes to swarthmore now.

i think 25-30 would be good. but if you knew them for a while, you should give them some sort of discount (in my opinion).

i'd have to say 18-23 dollars ish. i hoenstly do'nt know about gas prices since i don't drive but you should keep that into account. and i don't nkow how well you teach so i can't suggest a price but hm...

think about how effective you are as a teacher/tutor. if you're really smart but can't get your student to understand you or something like that & if you ask for like 25-30 ish amount, the mom might think she's wasting her money. but if you're really good at getting the student to study better and help the student understand really well despite your experience, then it won't matter how much the mom pays you. (i hope that made sense o_o)

It really depends. If you're just working out of the textbook, then 12 dollars sounds about right. However, if you have lesson plans thought up, worksheets made, and study guides written, then you can make the case for charging more. If you were only charging 10 dollars before, it will be hard to make the case for charging more unless you go to the person's parents and make your case with your prepared material.

When I started out tutoring (in high school) I think I got like.. 25 an hour? Now for one of my oldest kids, I get 60 for 1.5 hours and I'm a college junior.

It's kind of up to the parents though and your reputation also. If you're a first time tutor, you can't really say anything. All my rates/raises were up to the parents. I never know what I'm going to get paid haha

I'm glad I found this thread because I'm going to start tutoring one of my friends who didn't graduate and is currently making up credits. His English isn't that good (he's a fob) and needs help in science, math, and English because he's making up those courses right now so he can get his diploma by the end of summer.

I have no idea what the pay is going to be, and my friend even asked me what I wanted my hourly wage to be, but because I'm his good friend and I've never really tutored someone before, I don't even know what I should say. But yea at least now I know I should let his parents think up of my wage.

LOL, after reading these replies, I see that I am being completely ripped off.
I charge $10/hr and I tutor two students, one in Alg 1 and one in English.
I just felt bad asking for more than that ):

i'm in year 12 right now and i tutor a year 11 girl in Japanese Beginners (a course which we haven't completely finished at school yet
and i get $30 (AUD) an hour...
also they're really nice so they pick me up and take me home by car as well ><
i think they pay way too much but they're the ones who came up with the price... but since you're soon to be in College then i think you should charge more

I think you should definitely charge more~!

I'm a junior and I tutor some 8th graders, and I get $15 an hour, and since you are driving to their house AND you are in college, a higher rate is definitely a must.
Of course, it also depends on how you feel about it.
It might be tad awkward if you just pop the new number on them.

I do 15 dollars/hour at my house.

So 20-25 seems reasonable if you're going over there. Maybe more 30 sounds fine even.

Haha. Well since you're a upcoming college freshman...I'd say 15-20. I'm getting paid $10 for tutoring this kid in language arts/writing. I'm an ongoing sophomore in high school though. xD
