So I have a really fobby mother who thinks all black people are gangbangers, carry guns, do drugs, are out for her money, and all other stereotypes that brainwashed her due to the media. She's the type that will lock her doors whenever a black guy walks near her car. I was watching Sweet 16 (Makes me feel so much better about myself!) and this girl tries on this gorgeous emerald dress and my mother makes this ludicrous remark,

"Oh, black people love that color." As though it was common knowledge.

WTF crazy.gif

Next a dove commercial for dove deodorant comes on, and as they show different colors, emerald green comes up and there are people of all color wearing emerald green. I pointed that out to my mom and I even told her I liked the color, but she just pretended not to hear me.

Does it bother you when someone close to you says something ignorant or racist?
What do you do?

sad.gif I wanted to go ape shiet... but that's just me. I love her and all... but her attitude bothers me a lot.

Yeah, I kind of know how you feel. The only one in my family that is really racist is one of my older brothers, based mostly around some bad experiences he's had. It annoys me, and I recognize that he's ignorant in that regard, but really there's no arguing with him about it & certainly no changing his mind--I've tried before.

I agree... we should not judge a group by the actions of few. sad.gif

Yeah, I've constantly pointed that out to my mother, but no success. I'm surprised she did not brainwash ignorance or hate into me though, since she is my mother.

Well- she doesn't hate them. She's just scared of them.

It bothers me a loooot!
If somebody makes a crude comment
like that, it makes me want to full out
punch them in the face! If it's somebody
I know, I'll just ignore them for a long
period of time, then confront them about
it later.

My parents are the same way. I always tell them to shuttup, haha.
I just tell them you don't know them so don't judge them. But they
do it when they watch game shows and gets mad, saying their stupid
and stuff. I hate it, because not all of them are like that..

Just their remarks, period makes me mad. But you can't change them they're
stubborn as can be. Just be glad they don't do it in public.

i know how you feel. it gets on my nerves A LOT.
and it's not just from my mom; it's from my mom, her side of the family, AND dad. tsk tsk.
the one thing that sad is that they make such ignorant remarks to EVERY ethnicity, even their own...sometimes. someone in my family once said "ching ching chong chong" and he knows that i have Chinese blood. i was really offended by that.
another time was when i was listening to Korean music and someone (don't remember who) yelled out, "Watch they're going to shoot you if you keep listening to them." -___-

i'm ashamed for having family members who are like this. it seems like only the adults make these remarks.

My dad isn't racist, but he grew up in a predominantly asian/black neighborhood/school. A lot of black kids used to pick on him, and a few times I've heard him generalize about black people...maybe once or twice. He doesn't hate black people though...must have just been angry that day or something. It doesn't bother me. I don't think it's very easy to change older people though who believe those stereotypes because it's been ingrained in their heads for so long. I suppose you could invite the whitest black girl/guy who doesn't fit the stereotype and bring em home to show her that not all blacks are gangstas.

But I guess we are all guilty of generalizing...I can say that I am. One time a black guy who was wearing gangsta like attire started running in my direction while I was walking down the street and I was like "OH F---". But it turns out he was just running towards a Denny's which was right across from me.

omfg, no matter how much i call it out, they're still kidna racist. i hate it. it's not only embarassing, but i feel like one of these days my dad is gonna offend the wrong person & you know...

OMG I say that to my mom too.
She called some white ladies crazy because they were petting on our dog. O.o I was like "wow mom, that's terrible, how would you feel if someone called you a crazy chinese lady" We're not even chinese btw.
But she just responded with "So? EVERYONE is the same, they all talk about each other like that" and I said "what if they said, what a nice lady, she had such a sweet dog and yet you talk about them like that because they liked our dog, how do you feel about that mom?." and she said nothing. =)

My mom only turns on the racist switch when its about my brothers' choices in girlfriends.
Other than that, you can tell she wants to say something, but doesn't.
Oh, and sometimes when a black person is on TV and is doin something wrong sleep.gif

Sometimes when a white person's mug shot shows up I'm like "LOOK MOM!"
And she ignores me ;_;

It bothers me a great deal when someone says that. I don't care if it's a person I don't know, I'll just tell that person right then and there.

My mom does the same thing! She's racist to African Americans, Koreans, Chinese people (even though she's half Chinese herself), Japanese people, and Mexicans. Yeah, that's right. She's just so unreasonable. We were watching the news together and something about two black guys robbing a liquor store and she said, "See? This is why you stay away from black people. They're all the same."

Her comment really disgusted me and I told her that that's not true and she keeps going on and on about how black people are always on the news doing bad things. YEAH OOOOKAY. fury.gif
