Can someone please help me; I'm trying to connect my laptop to the internet at home but it's not working. Before, I could go online by just plugging in the ethernet cable now that doesn't work. And when I look at the IP address of my laptop and that of my sister's computer, it's not the same, neither is the gateway and all that other stuff (I dunno.. lol); does that have anything to do with it?

How can I fix this problem? Please be detailed! And also, if you have time, step-by-step is super *cough* Hehhe... Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

Only wired? Aw come on we can make it wireless so you can run around your house while still visitng soompi!

The IP address of your notebooks shouldnt be the same as your sister's computer. The router assigns a different IP to each computer. Typically it assigns the IPs like 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3... I would expect your current IP to be something like 169.something.something.something right? If yes, then the DHCP didnt kick in. Your computer DHCP client might have been disabled or didnt start properly, hopefully a reboot will fix it.

They should however have the same subnet and gateway.

Plug the cable into your notebook then just restart it. If you still cant get online I will start typing the other stuff.

How do you reboot. T_T

I've tried restarting at least five times now, yesterday and today.

The subnet mask number isn't the same, neither is the gateway :X

Oh yeah... you know in that little section where it's like "address type" welps, mine says "manually configured" whereas my sister's is "assigned by DHCP". Does that have anything to do with it?

And mine starts with 142 and not 169.

Hey, if it goes wireless, do I have to pay something lol...

Bless your soul. ^^

OHH I fixed it, thanks for trying. I figured out what happened lol. ^^ I had to let it obtain all those stuff automatically instead of manually configuring it kekek; I had to do that at the dorms so my roommate and I wouldn't be using the same computer name or something.. I dunno.

Okay, lets see...
Would you like to try something "easy" first? Shutdown all your computers, then turn unplug your router. Wait about a minute, then plug in the router and turn your computers back on. Most of the time it fixes everything..

The following data should be used to set a STATIC IP so that your computer wont need to grab an IP from the router and just use the one you told it to use.

hit start->
run: cmd

Type Ipconfig
So how do the IPs look?

Not right?
Ipconfig /renew

Let it sit a while.. any luck yet?

If no, im a bit annoyed... haha
Im assuming you are using the other computer right now that is also connected to the same network right?

Run: CMD
Type: Ipconfig
This is what it should look like
Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

Once you get that information, go to your notebook.

Go to control panel, network connections, look for your network adapter should be like "Local Area Connection". Right click, properties.
Search for "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in that scroll box. Double click that.
IPB Image

Should look like that...
Enter the stuff from the dos window from earlier (use your own data)
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
~~~
Ip Address add 1 to the end so 192.168.0.2 becomes 192.168.0.3
Subnet Mask, just type that in.
Default Gateway, thats the IP of your router. Type that in.
Default DNS, just enter the same "Default Gateway" IP.
I see the new post:
Haha, thats good.
What broke?
lol u see in your ss, it was originally entered manually all those values, to the right, but instead i fixed it by letting it be "obtained manually".
Merry Christmas, and thanks for the help. happy.gif
And I think you meant automatically...
