A member of another forum I go to just went to the State Ref and failed because he had a turbo timer and aftermarket boost gauge installed. The Ref told him he failed because of those 2 items. Anybody ever hear of this? This is in California, and supposedly they passed a law about 2 months ago on this because it can affect emissions if "connected to the ecu."

I don't know what he went to the State Ref specifically for, but he said he was smogged and the ref inspected everything including his oil level lol

also the g can already run mid 13s stock and the hks intakes adds an estimated 10 extra hp and the exhausts add like 8 so yeah it should shove off about 1.5 to 2 sec off my times

If the turbo timer is one of those fancier ones that can control the boost control solenoid or a turbo control valve (similiar but different), then it is a modification to the emissions system. If its just a timer that keeps the ignition running for a little bit, then no, because that is a electrical modification, not a ECU modification.

A boost guage in theory could be considered a modification, because it does require tapping into vacuum lines or to a vacuum port. This will be evident when the inspector looks at the hood's emission's diagram and spots a vac line tap that isn't on the diagram. If you wanted to play it legal, 'untap' that vac line and do the SMOG, they can't say the boost gauge is a modification then.

Even though my car is turbocharged, I don't need a turbo timer, because i don't go into boost prior to shutting down the car. All you have to really do is let the impeller inside the turbo slow down to normal speeds and then you can kill the engine. Its not everyday that you shut off the engine right after boosting and that impeller is still spinning at high speeds without oil pressure...

So even though it's a modification, this stock boost gauge just being there makes it illegal?

no no he said because u need to tap into vacuum hoses which isn't in the wiring/emissions diagram of the car
in the case of a stock boost gauge it IS in the the diagram so it would be fine

yup the ref can fail you for whatever he/she wants, even if it's just to screw with you. a ref failed my friend's integra because it had a painted valve cover, which has absolutely nothing to do with emissions. just change it out get it signed off then change it back. cali rules are stupid.

for all your socal performance needs
