TRAILER
Once is a 2007 Irish musical film written and directed by John Carney. Set in Dublin, this naturalistic drama stars musicians Glen Hansard (of popular Irish rock band The Frames) and Markéta Irglová as struggling musicians. Collaborators prior to making the film, Hansard and Irglová composed and performed all but one of the original songs in the movie.

An unnamed, thirtysomething Dublin busker (listed in the credits as "Guy," played by Glen Hansard) sings and plays guitar on Grafton Street, a Dublin shopping district, struggling with the trials of performing on the street, including chasing after a heroin addict (Darren Healy) who attempts to steal his earnings. Lured by his music, an unnamed young Czech immigrant flower seller (listed in the credits as "Girl," played by Markéta Irglová) approaches him impertinently during one of his late night street performances and, despite his annoyance, persists in questioning him about his songs. Upon learning that he also repairs vacuum cleaners in his father's shop, she insists that he fix her broken vacuum.

The movie was supposedly made in 17 days under a low budget too.
It won 14 awards out of 18 nominations.

I saw this at a campus screening last year, and I really liked it, though it's not my usual type of movie. I think if you're willing to try something different, something more subtle, yet, powerful in its own way, you'll enjoy Once. The songs featured in this film are also very very good (because the songs are not just in the film, but they are an essential part of the characters and the plot).

I definitely recommend this film. smile.gif I also recommend that you watch it alone (and in the dark), because it is not a romantic comedy that you'd watch with a date, nor a blockbuster hit that large crowds or families would indulge in. But if you absolutely must watch it with other people, make sure they aren't going to talk or distract you (I can't stand people who decides a film is boring after the opening credits finish). It's just one of those "me time" films, (to me). If you don't make time for a film like this, you'll never get the feel or message that the director wishes you to get out of watching it (even when it's not a complex and incredibly thought-provoking film).

The soundtrack is bloody brilliant, while the movie itself is pretty sweet.

One of my favorite movies of last year. Simple & sweet.

Not enough good things can be said about the soundtrack. Glen & Marketa deserved that Oscar, and then some.
There was nothing to fear,
and nothing to doubt.

I loooove musicals and what I love most about "Once" is that it's a love story without the flashiness and super big numbers that people are used to with musicals. The movie was beautiful and I can't get enough of the soundtrack. <3
