i'm very interested in this major, and was wondering if anybody could tell me if they have any friends or relatives that are majoring in this field, and how they're doing with it? or your opinion on it personally.

I don't know anyone in the field, but the only famous Hotel Management school I can think of is at Cornell - so you could look at their program.

I'm going to do hospitality management which includes hotels.. Great schools for these programs are Cornell University, Penn State-University Park, Michigan State University, Johnson & Wales University.

Sorry I didn't answer your question... but although I haven't experienced it yet but going to very soon.. I think it all depends on how well you deal with people, how much you love being around people, and just loving to help anyone and everyone. smile.gif

My friend goes to UMass for Hospitality Management and she's say's its pretty good. Cornell has the best program for this major, at least from what I've heard.

Yeaa I read about Purdue University's hospitality program. I was going to apply but I decided Purdue wasn't right for me but there's also University of Nevada which is reallly good for hospitality..

As for becoming successful in the business, I went to a lot of hotels in New York for "Exploring Program" so I talked with a lot of the managers at the hotel such as Food & Beverage Manager, Market & Sales Manager, and the Housekeeping manager.. and they all told me that it's mainly about having experience in the field. One of the managers I talked to told me that she started when she was 16!! she started by just helping out at the desk and "filing" stuff.. so I guess a lot of secretary type work and now she became the market & sales manager and it took her 8 years. It takes longer for some people but if you're patient and love what you do then I guess it's all worth it. Of course most people start from the bottom and work their way up and you can become veryyy successful in the hotel business because the hospitality field is rapidly growing and there are hotels ALL OVER THE WORLD!!

ahahah i hope I helped.. biggrin.gif

I have a friend that went into Hotel Management at Johson & Wales University ( http://www.jwu.edu/ ). I hear it's a really good place to go. Unfortunately, I haven't kept in touch with my friend, so I don't know how she's doing. ><;

Yea I think you should look into the hotel school here at Cornell. For easter me and my friends went down to the hotel school because they were having a brunch, and it was amazing! The hotellies had set up a huge dining room hall with tables of food everywhere, and a huge chocolate fondue fountain in the middle with food all around it. And of course alittle place in the corner to ditch the kiddies at cool.gif I don't know about other hotel schools but at Cornell you have actual visitors and students that you practice on, as the major part of the school is itself a hotel for those coming here.

My cousin studies Hotel Management in Aus.. and I have a friend doing it in Switzerland.

It seems like Hotel Management is a popular study these days.

i'm currently majoring in hotel management at NYU biggrin.gif

there are many different fields within hotel management so it really depends on what you like and are interested in. i'm thinking of going into conference/events planning or finance & accounting.

sometimes the classes can get boring (what classes don't?)
but we've been on a couple of trips to hotels (new york palace and marriott marquis)
those really taught me a lot about how hotels really work
and from what i've seen, it looks really stressful but fun
