Hi, I'm going off yo university next year and I'm planning to get myself a laptop. Although my budget isn't big, I still want one with decent quality and enough memory to store all my reports and assingments. What are some of the key features I should look for and do you have any brand you wanna recommend to me?

Why don't you tell me a little more of what you plan to do and what your budget is so I can help you out a little bit more?

Okay so I'll just work with your budget then.
Processor- AMD is the choice. You can choose to wait until the new chips come out to purchase that, or let the newer AMD processors bring down the older, yet sufficient, processors they have right now (AMD Turion 64X2). They are coming out with the new AMD Turion 64X2 Ultras soon and those are going to be the best budget processors. They have integrated video chipsets, but it won't be a crappy one like the ones Intel offers in their X3100 video chipsets.
RAM- At least 2GB.
HDD- 160GB should be enough.
Screen- For a student on that type of budget you would want a 14.1" or 15.4" screen. Resolution will vary.
Ports- They all come with VGA and S-video nowadays, you would use those two ports to connect your laptop to a projector, external monitor, or a television. ~ 3 USB ports.
Optical drive- At least a DVD/CD burner combo drive.
Wireless- Wireless G should be fine.
Anything else such as a web cam, HDMI port, card reader, etc.. would be an added bonus.
Then when you're buying a laptop for school, ALWAYS consider some sort of extended warranty and know what the extended warranty will offer you as far as accidental protection and what not.
An extended warranty will be worth 10x it's value if something were to happen to your laptop. Especially in a high risk area like a college campus.
Then maybe consider purchasing LoJack for laptops incase your laptop were to get stolen.
All in all I see your laptop with the AMD Turion X64, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, so on and so forth.. to be about $500 + $250 for an extended warranty (Price will vary depending on where you purchase your laptop from) + $99 for Lojack 3-year subscription.
~$850 before tax/shipping.
