If you think being skinny is healthy, then think again. If you're skinny and you can't even run a mile, then you are definitely not healthy. For all those that think that being skinny is everything, well.. you're probably going to die early of disease because of a weak immune system. If you can't even lift moderate weights or even run a mile, then you're definitely out of shape.

A lot of people try to eat very little so they can become skinnier. But what does that actually result to? It results to a slower metabolism, a weaker immune system, and a weak body. So once you start eating a lot, you're going to get fat as hell because you're body's metabolism is jacked up for eating so little. most of these people(those that eat very little) are pretty lazy as well because they lack energy to do anything due to the lack of calorie intake.

But you can be skinny and fit at the same time. With exercise and a proper diet. It's simple really.. you eat a moderate amount, and then you exercise, run, weight lift, etc. if you love food and like to eat a lot, go right ahead. don't let this notion of becoming fat get to your head just because you eat a lot. you can still be healthy and eat a lot. all you need is proper exercise. take off 30minutes-1hour of your day to exercise. you'll feel more energetic during the day.

sorry if i came off in the wrong tongue or what not, but i really do care about people's health, and i hate it when girls think that being skinny is everything, because it isn't. (i'm a sucker for a girl that plays sports!)

p.s. keep in mind that i am talking about some, and not all skinny people.

I don't think healthy has anything to do with being skinny or not. Skinny people can be in good condition, but fatter people can also be.

I'm actually skinny and my immune system is almost perfect, I didn't get sick for more than 5 years now. Also, I eat regulary. My doctor said it's because I tend to "flounce" so my metabolism is good (duno in english), those people can really much but don't get fat after all.

As you already said, just do exercises to keep yourself healthy.

Girls want to be skinny because of the media influence I believe.
In my opinion curvy girls are prettier than those typical skinny ones.

^Me too, girls with curves and muscle are much more attractive than bags of bones, IMHO smile.gif

I definitely agree with everything that's been said. I'm currently in China right now, and everybody wants to be skinny (mainly the young women who like following trends), but the skinny that is approved of is the kind that seems like one is starving, poor and unhealthy. I doubt these girls can run a mile or lift a 15-pound weight several times. mellow.gif

there is definatly a healthy skinny and an unhealthy skinny.

if someone doesnt eat meals and skips them to be skinny, OBVIOuSLY, thats bad.
but if someone can eat healthy food, exercise, then they could be healthy skinny.

I could eat all i want and just sit all day and i would never gain weight cuz of my metabolism.
but that would be boring.
Some people are just naturally skinny ya know?
i love food a lot.
im skinny but i can run a mile and stuff (although i hate running. its like im running running..and running?)
but i get what you mean.
if someone skips meals and is obsessed with being extremely skinny and dont have ANY plans on toning their body....it creeps me out.

Healthy skinny FIT>

I don't disagree with you that skinny isn't everything, but I don't think you should say that skinny ppl who hardly eat and don't exercise will have weak immune systems. ALL of the women in my family are completely out of shape yet extremely skinny. I only eat once a day, and I NEVER exercise. Puh I can't lift more than 30 lbs lol. But we're very healthy, there's hardly anyone who developed a serious disease, and there isn't anyone in the last 3 generations who have died before the age of 80. Just saying~

^But if you can't lift 40 pounds, how are you going to save a little kid from a fire ph34r.gif
But I agree with you. There's no point of being skinny if you're huffin and puffin after running a lap around the track.

^ Yes, the opportunity to save children from fires comes up all the time. mellow.gif And I think saving someone from a fire requires a lot more than just being able to lift someone. sleep.gif Also, just b'cuz I "huff and puff" around the track, it doesn't affect my lifestyle in any way. The only thing it affected was my middle school PE grade. sweatingbullets.gif

Skinny's different from lean. Lean people actually live a healthy lifestyle.

Skinny people just don't...have muscles. Hahaha.

lol. wow I completley agree with this biggrin.gif im skinny as heck, but ever since I stopped dancing / general working out.. my immune system x general cardo w.e. system is so weak compared to how it was before that it got me rather ...erm... ohmy.gif in trying to get me back into the gym.

^^;; i always get irritated when I say im out of shape, and people immediatley jump to the conclusion that it means "i need to lose weight" when really it means, I want to be able to run up flights of stairs again without feeling like Im about to pass out.

Wonder if any of that made sense ...

From my opinion, I think skinny = bones & slender
Fit = muscle & curves. & also slender smile.gif

yes i definitely agree with you, once you start eating normally you WILL GAIN LOADS OF WEIGHT because it happened to me. actually i didnt just eat normaly, i kinda binged. most normal ppl dont do it, but ihave issues so yeah.

but i have tried losing weight the "healthy way" twice, i dont even touch fatty foods and exercising almost everyday of the week, plus i did sports, and i DID NOT WORK. i'm not lazy. it just doesnt work for me. and my immune system wasn't down, in fact i didnt get sick at all those 2 years.

so it simply depends on the person. however i highly dont recomment starving yourself. it's just not fun and you never want to do anything.

Great thread! I used to be one of those peeps obsess with losing weight like to a size 0, so I would go on those crazy diets. But no one can diet forever. Now I just eat w/e I want, but I make sure I burn some off. I not obsess with the scale as before, but instead I want to be healthy and toned. I hate exercising, who doesn't. But I go to the gym everyday and work out for like 3 hours. My focus switch from being skinny to being healthy.

in response to the topic title:

skinny historically is being unattractively thin: a figure of mostly skin and bone.

nowadays, especially in the West, we are so used to seeing heavy people that being just relatively slim is being called skinny.
but having excess body fat is in no way healthy, especially if it is accompanied by a lack of physical activity and there is noticeable accumulation of torso/abdominal fat.

example: imho, nicole richie at her tiniest was actually "skinny" but how she looks now is really quite fine.

Eh i guess.

To me, unhealthy skinny people would be anorexic. lol now that's dangerous for your health

I think that it also depends on your height too. Someone who's 5'8 and is only 110 is considered skinny to me. They may be unhealthy or healthy (considered to be fit, exercise, lost weight, etc) with the weight of 110, but I would think that 5'8 and 120 (around there) is 'perfect' for the person. I'm 4'10 and 88 lbs which looks like it's unhealthy because of the number; However, if you compare a girl who is 4'10 to 5'8 and 88 to 110 are about the same and a bit different. I just think that if you're small and you weigh less then it's fine. If you're taller than other people and weight less, then I think you're skinny. I know for sure that I am unhealthy skinny because I'm lazy when it comes to exercise. I do plan to start working out when school starts again. haha.

skinny doesn't always mean weak! My sister is on the track team and she's a toothpick... she also eats a lot more than I do. O_O

AND, just because you're a little on the thick side doesn't mean you'll be healthier or stronger, lift weights, run the mile, etc....

But, I'm glad you are aware and concerned for the health of others. =)
