well if you want a phone for its looks , then go with Samsung( Korean brand) . But if you want a lot of functionality then go with Nokia (Japanese brand).

Personally I would go with Nokia .

^ exactly what tony said
but Nokia is a Finnish brand, not japanese

edit: just to add why

Samsung mainly has very good designs, but you can't customize anything besides their own theme, which usually comes in black or white...very basic

while Nokia don't really have the designs, but you can customize a lot more, add your own application/programs that you can download on the net

Don't forgot about Sony Ericsson =)

Samsung is known for their design? I've never heard that. Samsung is actually very well known for their focus on technology-driven products.

If you're in the US, you will probably find that Nokias are rare because their phones are incompatible with their networks. So even if Nokia make great phones, it's not likely that their features will work in the US.

How ? Most (if not all Nokia phones) are GSM based phones so as long as you are with T mobile or AT&T you are fine and there shouldnt be incompatability . My friend had a Nokia N95 8GB and he can use all his features. Nokias are known for their functionality because it is so flexible.

I would personally chose Samsung because I'm more for style then functions, but still it's up to you what you want.

Mp3, camera and stuff..

Based on the 2 Samsung phones and 1 Nokia phone I've used, I'd say Nokia > Samsung. Nokia phones are sturdier (they're known for making long lasting phones). If you're going for looks only, Samsung would have the better choices. Downside is, their phones tend to have horrible battery lives (I'm talking about >6 hrs talk time). I prefer phones with a good battery life.

samsungs have crappy battery life and aren't as sturdy. but they're stylish
nokias are sturdier. don't know about battery life and imo they're not as stylish as samsungs

and...correct me if i'm wrong but i think generally nokias tend to be more expensive compared to samsungs with similar functions

I limited my choice to only Samsung, LG or Toshiba when I change my mobile
Because I want my phone to be stylish and look different from others XD (Function? As long as it can text, call and with camera)
but when comes to function. Nokia or SE absolutely will be better, and their applications are easier to get from web.
