My dad is going to force me to start reading books during the summer break...But I don't know what to read. Also, I usually really hate reading and I'm picky when it comes to books. Is there any recommendations of good books?

The books that I have liked are of different varieties so I don't exactly know what type of genre I like the most. Hrmm...I do remember that a few years ago, I used to LOVE the Series of Unfortunate Events like, crazily. That was probably the only series of books that I ever really enjoyed.

I'd really, really appreciate it if you could give me a recommendation of a book you think I might like and a short summary to it?

Mods, delete this if it's not allowed...x.x

Oh, and in case you need to know, I'm 14. So the reading level of the book should just be around high school level...I guess? Hahaha XD

Haha, so does my friend. XD She's talked to me about it for hours on end....=OO

I'm not too sure if I'd enjoy that...It seems like one of those books that I'd enjoy the movie of, but possibly not the book series. Kind of like, Harry Potter for me. X.x But maybe I'll still try to give Twilight a chance. Thank you! =]

i also recommend the twilight series. i just got into the twilight series this summer. it's addictive. as in, i read the first three books in less than a week, including like a day or two of not reading. short description: EPIC love story between a vampire and a human girl, with a little werewolf love triangle thrown in. the book mainly revolves around the romance between the two main characters, but there are parts that are full of suspense especially at the climax of the books. i will give the author props for the suspense parts. it always scares the crap out of me whenever i read those parts. it's not an exaggeration when i say it's an epic love story...it might even be somewhat of an understatement.

even though it's an EXCELLENT series, it's definitely not the next harry potter as people have been calling it. it doesn't really appeal to as wide an audience as harry potter. caution though...it gets really sappy at some parts and sometimes the love between the two main characters becomes way too epic and surreal to be believable. it worked for me since i'm a sucker for that kind of stuff. i guess it might work for you since you're a little bit younger than me and perhaps more impressionable.

i kind of get what you're saying about harry potter being a series that you'd rather watch the movie of than the book [although the books are just like 2509433464694586 times better than the movies], but twilight imo is definitely not one of those kinds of series. i feel like the book creates these wayyy too surreal kinds of people that would just not be acted out well enough in a movie. the author sets these really really high bars for the characters not only physical looking wise but emotionally and mentally wise as well. this isn't to say that i'm not somewhat excited for the movie...i just don't expect too much from it.

if you haven't read the entire harry potter series, you should really give the series another shot. the series is amazing. i feel like the series gets better [for the most part] with each book.

if you like romance, I recommend The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.
Love me when it makes no sense at all.

Check out Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely. I couldn't put it down when I read it. It's a dark fairy tale.
I also liked Tamora Pierce's books... they're usually about a strong willed female. Her "wild magic" series is pretty good.

DEFINITELY Twilight and the other books in the series.

or...you could try classics like Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and Of Mice and Men.
=) they're really good, but a lot of classics I have to force myself to read the dull beginning, because once that's gone the book is a masterpiece.

Check out "Mortal Instruments" series. I'm surprised that it's not as popular as Twilight. It's a package of action, romance and all the stuff about creatures of darkness. Warlocks, vampires, werewolves and dark hunters. Interesting combination! The first 2 books are "City of Bones" and "City of Ashes". I'm still waiting for the third one.

The next series on my list is "Percy Jackson and the Olympians". Basically, it's a Harry-Potter-like series with Greek mythology. Don't let my crappy description turns you off! I swear it's much more enjoyable than Harry Potter, it's hard not to compare teen series to each other tongue.gif (I used to be a fan of Harry until the 5th book). The whole series includes 5 books. The 5th one will be released around this August, as I recall.

And if you enjoy "Life is a series of Unfortunate events" (I luv the movie), I would like to recommend another series named "The Grímm Sisters". It's based on fairy tales with some amusing twists and a bit of detective elements thrown in for the fun. Only that I'm dying for the 7th books. Yes, that sounds like a lot but each book is only around 250 pages or so. It's children series, anyway smile.gif

For non-series books, I'd recommend "The Blue Girl" by Charlies de Lint, "You don't know me" by David Klass and "The Truth about Forever" by Sarah Dessen.

I recommend Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy. I read it when I was about your age. It's about this guy "Scarlet Pimpernel" who rescues people from the guillotine, set in the French Revolution. It has adventure and romance. I also recommend The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. But it might be too heavy/dark for you since you're only 14. It's about a family's experience during the Great Depression. I read the book when I was a junior in high school. But I definitely recommend reading it sometime.

Stocking up on literature is always a fun pastime, even if it's less than consentual. Series of Unfortunate Events, hmm? I haven't picked that up in a long time.

Since, I've lately been on a Great Classics binge, I'd list some worth meandering through:

"Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo. There's no way to really apply some synopsis as even the abridged versions fall in giving liberty to such a stroke of genius. Wouldn't mind throwing in "Hunchback of Notre-Dame" as well; those books are however, as most are, bricks.

And if you haven't done so already, check out some of Gail Carson Levine's books. Some of them really are intended for younger audiences re: itty bitty kids, but they're always so very refreshing.

And "Jane Eyre". I've got a pinch that you'd like that.

I recommend "World War Z" By: Max Brooks (Yes the guy who wrote the Zombie Survival Guide.)

QUOTE
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (abbreviated WWZ) is a novel by Max Brooks which chronicles a theoretical zombie apocalypse, specifically the titular "Zombie World War", as a series of after-the-fact oral history interviews with prominent survivors.

Taking place in the 2010s, the book charts a war against the undead from global pandemic to mass panic, and then to an armed struggle to reclaim the planet. Rather than a grand overview or a single perspective, World War Z is instead a collection of individual accounts, each revealing an aspect of the larger plot and simultaneously presenting a very personal tale. These different accounts take the form of interviews between the author and the characters.

I notice that a lot of people recommend the Twilight series. My friends recommend it.

I still don't want to read.
