It will be my first decent gaming computer. I tried making my own before and it was a sad excuse for even a standard computer. haha
I'm a true minimalist.
I don't want to clutter my old system with useless junk.
Here's a list of what basic programs, I plan to use:
Norton Antivirus
RocketDock
WinRar
Gom Video/Audio Player
Firefox/Opera (not sure which one is better, any suggestions?)
Office 2007
Two games I plan to buy:
COD4: Modern Warfare
CS: Source
What are some programs/software you have on your computer?

You sould get WinZip, can be helful
And i perfer Interent Explorer over Firefox =P
And games depends on what you like. Seeing as how you picked COD4 and CS, i assume you like shooter games. Try Combat Arms?

- Firefox
- Foobar2k
- Pidgin
- iTunes (Used only to compress music & update iPod)
- WinRAR
- CCleaner
- Microsoft Office 2003 (2007 is too much for me)
Not necessary but does come in handy occasionally
- Adobe Photoshop
I don't use the AntiVirus programs... I don't venture into unknown websites

I forgot about CCleaner and yup, I use WinRar to zip and extract files, so I don't think I need WinZip.
I4gotMyID: yeah I like shooter games. It's easy to pick up and very hard to master! I haven't played any FPS since my CS v1.5 days. (like 5 years ago!) but I've heard CS:Source is good and COD4 is amazing. My computer will be arriving in a couple days and I'm really excited to try them out!
Any other utils that anyone recommends? I don't go to unsafe websites either.
In regards to spyware scanners, how useful are they? I don't like the fact that they actively run in the background. I had spysweeper and everytime it ran a system scan my computer was running on full for the next 30 minutes. Wouldn't a regular scan from CCleaner be enough?

here's my list:
- totalcommander (file manager) together with winrar -> u can do practically everything with this combo
- avira antivir (forget norton ... too slow) + windows firewall: some of u may argue that this is not safe enough ... BS! i am a network administrator and i myself often have to visit "questionable" sites ... but i never had problems so far
- firefox (plus usefull extensions, eg IE tab, flashgot etc)
- windows media player classic / vlc ... gom player is equally good
concerning games
i'd suggest crysis. actually there is a bunch of shooters out there ... but most of them (despite bein ok) suck compared to cod4
... yeah ^^

- Spybot S&D
- Adaware
- SpywareBlaster
- CCleaner
- Winamp
- JkDefrag/Defraggler
- Firefox
- Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint. 2007 or 2003. You could also just use notepad.
- 7-zip, like WinRar but I like it better.
- VLC Player
- Comodo Firewall
- Filehippo.com updater, if you want to stay up to date with the newest versions of programs.
These are my essentials and some of them are there just in case I need to use them. I don't use all of them everyday.
As for some of your questions. CCleaner just cleans out the useless stuff. Not all spyware programs have real time protection and you can always disable them. I just do full scans once a month or week, whatever I feel like doing.
I also recommend Firefox because it has so many useful addons that makes browsing much easier. It also has a IE tab addon, which is very useful for me when visiting Korean websites. There's a thread where people posted their addons on this forum. It can't be more than couple pages back.

I ordered a refurbed XPS 420 desktop with an ATI 8800 GT 512MB video card.
It will be my first decent gaming computer. I tried making my own before and it was a sad excuse for even a standard computer. haha

If you're a true minimalist, get rid of Norton. It is one of the most bloated softwares out there. Get nod32/comodo instead.

I feel like it's treating me like a 5 year old. It hides menus which now require extra clicks (oh I hate that confirm screen that pops up everytime I change a setting) and I feel like the response time is a lot slower!
Anyway, does anybody else use Gom Audio player?
I'm trying to make it default to use Gom Audio when I play Mp3's, but after I set it to that setting and click the button where it says, "always use this program when opening this type of file," it doesn't change the icon from WMA to GOM and also it doesn't open in Gom Audio! AH! I hate Vista!

Cool, I was thinking about getting Crysis, too. I was reading reviews and aparently, there's North Koreans in the game? haha I swear, if it not the russians or the germans, it's always the commie NKs.
That will be cool though! The review said they will be speaking in full out korean.
D K, I use Norton because I have the corporate edition I get from work for free. Otherwise, I would switch.
