OK so my friend and I went to a clinic to get birth control. I'm 18, and have a boyfriend who i've been sexually active with and so I decided that I should probably get pills. My friend told me that pills help clear up your skin since they have hormonal stuff inside the pills. I then called my bf and told him about the pills and he said that birth control pills make you fat. I asked him how he knew and he said that he knows some girls who are on it and they have gained weight from the pills because of the hormonal stuff in the pills.

I've heard from advertisements about birth control pills clearing up your skin, but do they really make you fat? I'm trying to lose weight, not gain any, and this is really starting to make me sad lol. My friend who I went to get birth control pills with has gained weight after she's started to take them, but she also was drinking a lot of alcohol when she was taking them so I'm guessing most of her weight is attributed to the alcohol.

Thanks so much everyone ^___^

http://www.teenwire.com/ask/2008/as-20080529p1689-weight.php

it says that recent studies say that they do not make you lose or gain weight and that there may be another reason for the loss or gain of weight.

Yes, they do...

I used to be stick thin no matter how much I ate, and ever since I started BCP I've become so chubby. >____>;
My eating habits have been the same, so I don't know what else to blame for my weight gain.

QUOTE
The combination of hormones (estrogens and progestins) found in some birth control pills can lead to weight gain. These hormones can cause fluid retention, increased body fat, and a bigger appetite in some women. Changes in eating habits, lack of exercise, and some medical conditions can also affect body weight whether or not you take birth control pills.

If you are worried about weight gain. Exercise. Most girls you see in film, media, or print are on birth control and have great bodies. Exercise and proper eating go a long way to making sure you have no unnecessary "weight gains" as you may have heard... But either way you need to preserve your future and UNWANTED pregnancies go a long way to drastically altering what your dreams and goals will be for the rest of your life.

^ Yep. It affects each and every girl individually. For the most part though, it does give you clear skin. A couple of my girlfriends gained weight from birth control. One of my friends even gained 20 pounds - which is the extreme. I didn't gain any weight.

i was on bc pills for about half a year and i didn't gain any weight at all :\
i basically didn't experience any side effects except for my boobs getting slightly larger and getting a super regular period.

but like everyone's been saying, it's different for different girls.

Anyways, I found something that might also help..

You should read the comments, and it seems like most women gained a lot of weight while on the pill. (._.)

most of my friends have gained weight from the birth control but they told me it's because their hormones make their cravings go crazy.
could be a possible answer.. and i'm guessing if you didn't already have a healthy diet then the birth control will make you gain more weight probably 5-15.. 20 at most.

my friend tried this but she did not gain weight at all...
by the way...she got prettier skin and more beautiful boops....
but the first time she used it...her period was super long....more than 10 days...
but after that first period...she got regular period...
she said that this pill is good for people who wanna hav beautiful skin and bigger boops...
that's jus my opinion in which my friend told me...
No matter where life takes me, no matter the distance, no matter the length of time, no matter the obstacles – I will always come back to you. Even if I, myself, am not sure if I will come back – in the end I will always comeback. They come back even if they feel they shouldn't, they come back even if the world tries to stop them, they come back because they ultimately know where they belong... and who they belong to. - WTTW

Most men never see past the smell of a woman’s enthralling perfume and her fake smile. Most men are: “what you see is what you get.” The truth is, when it comes to a woman: “What you don’t see, is really what you’re going to get – later on.”

People do not always gain weight as a result of BC pills. Some people actually lose. For those who do gain weight, it usually stems from their body's inability to adjust to the sudden increase in hormones, so it's almost like you're pms-ing, so you crave food more often and subsequently gain weight. But like I said it doesn't happen to everyone.

I also heard that there are new types available where the weight gain is not a side effect, btu I can't be sure. I think it ortho tricyclen.

i gained around 12lb in the last year... but i've been taking them for irregular periods for two years and i had no weight gain the first year, so i'm not sure. last year was also my first year in university, so the freshman 15 could've also been attributed to that =) as well as minimal exercise and lots of late night food! lol i think it DID increase my appetite though.

smile.gif if you're a normal, average, healthy girl, you should be fine. just make sure you keep exercising and watching your food intake.
smile. you don't know who's day you're making. :)

I was just talking to my doctor about this. I recently went on them.

Usually, it's less than 5 lbs gain IF ANY AT ALL. A lot of girls expect to gain weight, and somehow as a result, experience a placebo effect.

I've actually been on ortho novum 1/35-28 for the passed week (almost all my friends are on othor tricyclen, I don't know why I got something different, we all went to the same clinic). The girls on ortho tri cyclen gained quite a bit of waterweight (bloated feeling)

I personally have experienced nausea and vomiting sleep.gif But it's supposedly normal for the first cycle or something and goes away.

So we'll see what happens.

If you're worried only about weight gain, just try to watch your diet-- eat healthier foods and make exercise a part of your regular regime.
Personally for me, I am more scared of the moodiness that seems to come hand in hand with birth control..... but to stop that... I just think to myself "Don't let a pill control your brain!"

haha

hope I was some help =)
