Okay so I'm going to become a junior and the whole "what am I going to do after high school" thing just slapped me across the face. I'm from Texas and hoping to get into UCLA (fat chance) but as you know out-of-state tuitions are ridiculous.
Everyone's telling me I need to apply for scholarships and such but I don't know much about the whole scholarships thing. Is there anyone here that can give me more insight on it? And also does anyone know where I can apply for some?
I know of scholarships.com and fastweb.com but I want to look into some more websites. Thanks ahead of time! smile.gif

Just apply.. it's straightforward. While most people might apply during senior year, you must start now. Trust me -- I'm going to be a senior next year and since financial aid is extremely hard to get for me, I have to spend time studying for SATs, do ECs, study APs, fill out college applications... etc. This is overwhelmingly busy and extremely stressful, and while I know that it is possible to make it, it will be extremely painful going through it. It's best to start now so that you will have a little bit less stress than I do.

Fastweb is a good website, but you really have to spend time looking around it and start searching/applying now, planning now. There are all kinds of scholarships... amazing, from making a video, to writing about political essays (I'm sure very few people apply for them since politics isn't like the hip thing for most youth), to doing engineering projects (search Siemens scholarship... a person in a school about a few 10-20 miles from my school applied for it, did a project, and won beaucoup bucks), to writing more essays, man.. i can't even name them all.. just search search search. it's all going to be worth it in the end, if you really want to go to UCLA.

SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH. GO TO YOUR SCHOOL'S CAREER CENTER. GO ON FASTWEB. DESPERATELY SEARCH LIKE A MADMAN.

definitely start your scholarship things now. you're gonna be too busy in senior year.

work hard on answering this "essay" question: how is this money going to help you? a lot of the scholarships i applied for had this question. so answer that question goodddd!

coca cola has an annual scholarship. it usually ends in october i think
bill gates has a super scholarship too. must write a ton of essays though.

and just ask your counselors if there are any local scholarships available. there are bound to be a handful

Definitely ask your counselor or something. At my school, I have a college room and the advisers there help with anything related to college. If you have something similar to that at school, you should really ask through that. I don't know of many scholarship websites other than fastweb...
but since I have some college prepping sessions from school, I'm sure I'll get info about scholarships and I can pass some info about that onto here.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm currently applying for a lot. I just don't have any acceptances yet *sigh*
I'll have to wait to ask my counselors since it's still summer but I'll be sure to go over everything with her.

I'm also going to be a junior and recently I've been researching into scholarships. You have NO idea how many there are. I'm almost feeling overwhelmed because I'm planning to do all of them. Definitely, check online sites because there are a lot of scholarships available online. fastweb. scholarshipexperts. etc etc. There are some information in books too so maybe you can visit your local library and look in the nonfiction section for all the 370s.

materialistic? -- almost.
