I don't know if there has been a thread like this before. But I'm a junior in high school, and I have no idea as to what colleges I want to look into. Basically, I wanna know some of the universities that have a nationally recognized pre-med program. thanks for all the help!

Pre-med is basically the same everywhere. People assume that schools with good med schools (Johns Hopkins, Duke, etc) have great pre-med programs as well. There's really no such thing as a great pre-med program ... you should look for something more specific like which, if any, science you plan to major in and where that is the best.
Thanks mama_gir1!

^^^ ....

Yeah ... Pre-med is basically the same everywhere.

Maybe go to a school with a strong science program?

And remember, if you go to an undergraduate school that's host to a good medical program, like Hopkins, Harvard, UW, you'll generally have more competition. You'll have uber smart people competing against more uber smart people.

Brown has a special pre-med program. But mind you, it's very, very difficult to get into. I, personally, only know 1 person who got in, and I've heard of like 2 others via facebook.

The program is called PLME; you should definitely google it or something. I'm not 100% sure about PLME things, this really is all second hand info that I hear about it. Once you get into PLME, you are automatically accepted into Brown's med school (i.e. no MCATs!!...i think...), and rather than spending 8 years (4 undergrad, 4 med school), you can finish in 7, I believe.

It's definitely worth checking out.

Like others have said, many colleges don't have a "major" or "program" in premed. However, most do have premed advising. You don't have to major in science to get into med school. But I think it's probably better to major in something like bio/chem since those are essentially what you are gonna focus on in med school.

From what I know, Washington University at St. Louis has a pretty good premed program. Of course, there's Johns Hopkins.... their med school is incredibly hard to get into. I read on their forum that the majority of their med students attended undergrad at JHU as well. What joonage said is very true. It's definitely a lot harder to get good grades at more competitive universities. And to get into good med school, you need to have good grades. That's why some people choose to attend a slightly easier undergrad school so they'd have good grades when they apply to grad school.

PLME is so frekin' hard to get into man. I gave up on it. lol

I'm applying to Boston University's 7 year program. Still hard as hell, but easier than PLME.

Remember for those combined degree/early acceptance programs are hard as well. Again, you're competing against the best of the best.

And most programs require a minimum GPA throughout your undergraduate. Also, remember that most require a MINIMUM MCAT score. They just don't like publicizing that fact often. So, if you miss up on your MCATs, you're pretty much out of luck.

For the schools on this list. Do you have to apply for the programs when you apply for the schools? Or do you just apply for the schools and take it on from there when you get in?

Drexel has a 6 year program, where you study over summers as well I think.

But, honestly, I don't think one should really go to Drexel. Not bashing its reputation, but the place seems sorta shady. xD

Mass - Boston U has a seven year one. Northeastern has one with Tufts where you apply sophomore year in college.

NJ - I believe Rutgers has it for Jersey residents.

NY - I think there are several. One of the SUNYs has one I think. Not quite sure.

If you want a Canadian University, there's one called McMasters... (or is it McGill?) One of those don't require you to write the MCAT, but you have to bust your ass off. It's really competitive.
