Since somebody made a topic about having twitches while sleeping, it reminded me of something else I do when I'm asleep...

Without my control, my body would automatically pull my upper body and make me sit up on the bed when I'm sleeping.
And it's only as I am pulling myself up that I sort of wake up and notice what I'm doing, but I would always fall back asleep afterward.
This has been happening to me for a few months I think, but it's becoming more frequent lately.
Like I would sit up 2 or 3 times a night now.

Anyone know what this is and why it's happening?

Does it count if I actually notice what I'm doing though?
Cuz I thought sleep walking was when you're doing something without having control of your body or knowing what you're doing.

I actually got up once and walked over to my closet and went back to my bed,
but I fully knew what I was doing..just couldn't control my body.

One time, I woke up in the middle of the night to take a wee. When I came back, my little nephew--in the bed next to me--sat straight up like a zombie and scared my heart like crazy! Then after 3-5 seconds, he fell back down. he was sleeping btw. creepy!

insa it would appear you're in what's referred to as stage 2 dreaming, where the body is entering the second stage of sleep and is shutting down the body and starts to dream. Twitching and uncontrolled movement often occurs at this stage and it's common for a person to know that they're performing these movements, yet not have any control over them. Dreaming is often blurred and unfocused and the stage known as Rapid Eye Movement begins (REM).

Now in most cases the brain secretes hormones to paralyse the body (to prevent us acting out our dreams) and sometimes it's possible for a person to experience neither the paralysing hormones nor dream state and begin sleep walking or sleep talking. There's other combinations like sleep walking without knowing, paralysis without dreaming (quite terrifying) and a few others. Something that happens to children is the "Night Terrors" where children will start screaming, kicking and thrashing about, wake up then fall asleep again.

I'm not aware of any "cures" for sleep walking but if it's really a problem I think someone certified in NLP or Hynosis could offer some help. Alternatively you could try eating foods high in amino acids such as turkey, milk, bannanas and cheese.

I ended up outside of my house once when I was younger. I opened my eyes and saw my mom. She had followed me outside and asked me what I was doing. Of course I had no idea, so I just cried and threw a fit.

Ahh, okay. Thanks, that was really helpful.
But the thing is that when it happens multiple times a night, it's at different times.
Ranging from the beginning when I just fall asleep all the way to morning hours..
so it doesn't only happen when I fall asleep and begin dreaming.

lol yeah that'd be pretty freaky..sounds like a horror movie.
I've heard people sleep talk before..and that's already scary enough.

You're probably doing this several times a night because an average human goes through a single sleep cycle at least 4 to 6 times. Each ranging from 90 to 120 minutes.

Every night and every 90 to 120 minutes you would have to enter the second stage of sleep, again, before REM sleep, like what Deadalready said.

If you count it up you would be sitting upright at least 4 to 6 times at night all at different times.

its weird sleeping sitting up for me
cause the first time i got my ears pierced
i slept sitting up cause i thought the
back of the earring was going to poke
through my skin or my earring was going
to get caught in my pillow and rip my ear lol
but i kept waking up like every hour

but when i was little i would always fall out of my bed
cause i would always end up sleeping on the floor when i wake up haha XP

Have you been changing your sleeping patterns lately? Try to sleep during the times when you normally slept in before you noticed yourself doing this while you're sleeping.

Whenever I sleep later/earlier than what I'm normally accustomed to, I do some weird things when I'm sleeping... like falling off my bed, haha.

I have a friend who would sit up in her sleep, look around the room, whisper something out loud then lay back down and sleep. She does all of this while she sleeps. It doesn't happen everyday but it happens sometimes.

Honestly, I'm not sure why your body is acting like that-- I'm just sharing similar events that happened to someone I know.

forever you & i
