Buying New Car Online

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has experience with buying a new car online? Would you recommend that over buying a car at a dealership in person? I've stopped by a couple of dealerships, but haven't actually spoken with representatives yet. I am also looking for specific website recommendations for buying a car online, if possible. Thank you

You can get good prices if you shop online. Go to the sites, submit your information, then wait for e-mails with offers from dealerships. Then you can e-mail the online sales person to haggle prices. A bit of a hassle, but 1000x much better than doing it in person. Make sure you specify that the price is the "out the door price" or in other words, after taxes and fees from the dealer.
There are many places you can shop. carsdirect seems to have got some decent reviews.
carsdirect.com
autos.msn.com
carmax.com
autos.yahoo.com
cars.com
autobytel.com
vehix.com
some people go through costco if you want no haggling and obviously a membership.

Thanks! I requested a quote through carsdirect.com and got emails from representatives at several dealerships with the MSRP and options available, and I emailed two back for the "out the door" price. I have stated that I am very interested in the automobile but am still unsure. I have no experience whatsoever with haggling car prices... Is it a good idea to try to get the price lowered through online communication before going to the actual lot to talk to the sales person and see the car? Thanks a lot for your help

You should do most if not ALL the haggling online. Keep referring them saying that "another dealer" (don't tell them who quoted me a lower price." Keep going back and forth until you find a nice price. Also it is unnecessary to tell them you aren't sure about a car. The more sure and assertive you sound, the better chances you will see better quotes.
After you agree on the price and they tell you exactly what you are getting, e-mail the salesman and take the printed e-mail to the dealer and make sure you get that price OUT THE DOOR so there are no tricks. Anything funny added to the quote... WALK!

Thanks guys. I want to ask for advice regarding making the lowest price offer possible while keeping it reasonable. So I asked for the invoice price from sales people and looked it up online as well. I also read some stuff online on what people have recently paid for the same car in my area. With what is supposedly the dealer's cost for the vehicle, I am able to calculate a price that would give the dealership a reasonable profit? But then this wouldn't be the out the door price? When people say to always pay below MSRP on a new car, are they referring to just the cost of the car, or including destination charge and tax and other fees?
