i'm a pharm.d major and going into my second year. throughout my whole first year, i would hear and see second years studying crazily and just going crazy over organic chemistry. i mean, even my chemistry professor this year said he almost failed that course. is it as horrible as people say or are they just trying to "scare" the incoming sophomores?

My roommate's friend did Organic Chem last semester. She got an A in that class. I don't know if it was the grade distribution or what, but yeah. But it also helped that she actually liked that class and freaked out and studied for it all of the time. Good luck with that.

It all depends on your professor. I took it with a professor with a really thick Indian accent which I couldn't understand. I ended up retaking the course and getting a B with another professor. You just have to discipline yourself to study and practice practice practice. Mechanisms, reactions, synthesis, etc. It's really not that bad if you're willing to put the effort into the class. Just hope you get a good professor. Ask around and find people that have taken it and get a good view of all the professors teaching it. I wish you luck in the class!

Personally I've heard nothing but terrible things about that class, from everyone I've known who has gone to college.

It's like Bio-chem.

Nope, ezpz. Easier than General Chemistry.

It's mostly leaning towards mechanisms and understanding how things work. Labs are fun though.

My sister said it's just a a lot of memorization. She liked the class but it was a lot of work.

Some people say biochemistry is harder than organic chemistry, some people say vice versa. For me, biochemistry was a lot easier than organic chemistry -- I liked memorizing metabolic pathways but not mechanisms and reactions >_< I still have to take another quarter next fall and I am absolutely dreading it.

ochem is hard but if you study study study you'll definitely get by. pchem is a nightmare from what i heard from all my friends, even ones who did well before in ochem. Also try not to fall behind :/ Don't skip any class.

ochem is alright, it's do-able. just too many combos and sometimes you don't think of them...

I think it requires a lot of work. like, you have to put in a lot of effort memorizing reactions and understanding everything.
Personally, I really liked it and did way better in ochem than in gchem.

I'm not sure if it's different to over there, since I"m from Australia
I did an organic chemistry course this year and it was HARD. I think more than half of the people failed it, (and the university i go to is the best in my area). It had a lot of memorizing, reactions, and stuff I didn't even understand in it O_O
But I liked the labs

Anything that has '-chemistry' in it will be a challenge unless you're a complete Chemistry nerd.
I haven't done O-Chem before but B-Chem is stupid. ~______~

i hated ochem.. sure lab was fun, but exams were dry.gif .... i guess it was because my professor sucked an i never showed up to lecture. hahahahha

just takes lots of studying and totally not a class to get behind on, i honestly dont think its THAT hard.

just remember to write down everything and pay attention in class than your be fine. don't cram on last day because organic chem cannot be crammed with just a few days before the exam.

One of the hardest class ive taken up to date.
I got all A's on science classes previous of ochem and ended up with C. on ochem

i guess it depends on your prof and school.
i know a lot of my friends died and died and died taking orgo.
orgo, atleast in my school, is well known to be a viscious class,
even if you don't take the class, everyon knows orgo kicks everyone's butt... not in the good way

The first half (ORGO 1) of it is a BREEZE.

But when I got to the second half (ORGO 2) I understood the meaning of 'crash and burn'.
I don't remember how many nights I cried about the second half of Organic.
... But I got good grades but I sacrificed so many nights of good sleep for this ONE class.

depends if there is any written component in your exam. If there is, its difficulty is magnified by like 100X from pure MC exam. Cuz not only u have to recognize the reaction, you have the draw them out and its super hard.

well at first, it'll seem easy but as you get in-depth it becomes REALLY hard.
