i thought this would be the right section to put this article in since there's a lot of talk about diets and the water diets celebs go through.

use the link to get to the real article, but here are the hi-lites:

QUOTE
The court heard Mrs Page, from Faringdon, near Swindon, claimed Mrs Nash told her to drink large amounts of water and reduce her salt intake when she started the diet in October 2001.

She told the High Court that when she started vomiting Mrs Nash told her it was a normal part of the detoxification process.

Less than a week into the regime, mother-of-two Mrs Page had to be taken to Princess Margaret Hospital in Swindon after suffering a severe epileptic seizure. Doctors diagnosed low salt levels in her body - known as hyponatraemia or water intoxication.

She has been left with "cognitive deficit" which she says has forced her to give up work as a conference organiser.

Her husband Geoff, 54, said: "Her life has been seriously affected, perhaps ruined, by this fad-type way of losing weight, which I can only say is a dangerous method of weight loss."

He said his wife had previously tried several other diets and had been told to drink four pints of water a day by Mrs Nash. [...]

Hyponatraemia can result when a person drinks too much water. This dilutes their blood and causes water to flood their cells and organs.

Cells in the brain can then swell up, increasing pressure inside the skull. If vital regions of the brain are compressed this can cause symptoms ranging from headaches to problems with breathing or seizures.

[...]

Detox diets are based on the theory that toxins from "unhealthy" food and drink build up in the body and can lead to health problems.

Purging those toxins - through restricted diets, lots of water or using particular supplements - is meant to leave people feeling better and, often, thinner.

But critics disagree with the principle. Dr Andrew Wadge, of the Food Standards Agency, has branded detox regimes "nonsense" and said the body has its own system of getting rid of toxins - the liver.

message: leave detoxing to the liver and be very careful w/ those water diets.

and as a side note, i was talking to my friend whos going to be a doctor about detox patches, and he said that detox patches on the bottom of the fet dont really work like we think they do. the dark colors left on the pad are just dead skin that came off from the bottom of our feet. and for those science tests that say this and that toxic chemical was found on the pad, the chemical could have just been on the feet already cause our feet go many places and even carpets and floors we walk on, and shoes we walk in have those toxic kinds of chemicals.

Yeah I've heard of this but you'd have to be drinking HEAPS of water to actually do something like that.

^ You just lose the 'water weight.'

But anyways, wow.
I never knew such things can happen if you over drink water.
No wonder people say that you should only drink 6-8 cups of water a day.
I'm currently semi hiatus at the moment due to school.
*still pm me please, although it might take awhile to reply!

vomiting isn't part of detoxing.
maybe peeing a lot and pooping better is. (better as in, for those with constipation, it's easier to poop--at least for the one i've been doing for 3 yrs (7 days per year)).

and it is common sense that if you overdrink, you'll die.
there have been articles about this.
like one, this one guy, at his bachelor's party [night before his wedding] he lost a bet and had to drink a lot of water (probably about a gallon ish?) and he died from water intoxication.

i'm not trying to say that detoxing is really good.
but if done the wrong way, it is possible for you to receive negative consequences.
it shouldn't cause damages like that if you do it correctly, with the correct materials/food/whatever you use. but also, how a person's body functions differs a lot, so it's different for everyone, i guess.

but then again, i can't really generalize all detox diets b/c there are different kinds.
but the one i did has been tested by professional people and is proved to be safe and came out in articles. and it requires you to buy specific things and you don't necessarily only drink lemon water all day.

Excessive water CAN be bad for you. It can cause brain swelling...to get to that point would take a lot though.

drinking excess amounts of water explodes the cells in your body.
there was this one case where these parents made their little girl drink about a gallon of koolaid in one sitting
bc she wasn't behaving and she wouldn't finish her drink and she died from it.

it's crucial to replenish your electrolyte and salt content esp after a workout where you sweat a lot.. that's why it's good to drink gatorade and all that but i remember my prof once telling us that she recommended drinking chocolate milk after a workout.. choco milk not only has prot, calcium, and all those goodie vitamins, but it also helps restore your glycogen (carb) stores that you lose after exercise, which also then helps your tired muscles to recover quickly so you could be up on ur toes again

oh yeah, i don't think detoxing is bad.. but i do think it is only for certain people with extreme cases. it's pretty intense and definitely not for anybody.

perfect article to argue against those that use detoxing as a method to losing weight.
=X

imo just workout and eat healthy and you can be slimmer. ohmy.gif

leave your liver alone, it'll do its job fine as long as you dont have something wrong with it/you like hep B or hep C or fibrosis or cirrhosis=X
