because my mechanic used 10w40 but my manual for my car recommends to use 5w30,
jus wondering if that would damage my engine?

Simply put, no, 10w40 will not damage your engine. If your car recommends 5w30, use 5w30.

what is recommended by your car is what should be used. If your car recommends 5w30 then use 5w30 as Clix said. The type which is recommended is usually to provide your car with the best performance. I think its best if you did an oil change at a local Nissan dealership and ask them yourself.

its not that big of a deal, well...i guess in my case.
my car manual recommends 5w20, i use 5w30
some friends of mine that have the same car use: 10w40,10w30,20w50.

I have the 4th generation maxima as well. The manual says 5w30 but i always use 10w30 for some reason. Nothing has gone wrong yet but I would say do 5w30 because the manual says so

Hmm, in regions where people face more seasons with more extreme weather I know that oil grades may differ and can be better for your car if you use them.

Either grade should be fine, but stick with 5w30 if you don't want to worry about it. Otherwise you can use 10w40 during the summer, then 5w30 during the winter if you can remember to do it.
