Hey guys! Recently, my sister's laptop (Toshiba P100) started having some problems. We can turn it on, but the screen stays black. The fans are running, but no beeps are heard. After 5 minutes, there were a bunch of colorful bars running down the screen for about 3 seconds, and then it shut down by itself. It is running on Windows XP. Can anyone help??

if you can, plug in a external monitor from another computer and see if that works. That can explain the colorful bars.
The darkness might be prolems with the video chip, damaged screen, inverter, or backlight bulb.

Update: My sister decided to use the CD that came with the laptop to reset it to the factory defaults and such. After it was done, the keyboard wasn't working anymore. Then, the screen started flashing blue and white bars, and the power button doesn't even work anymore?! We can't turn the laptop off now, even. Any ideas what's going on???

You can turn the laptop off by holding down on the power button for about 5 secs. Try restoring it to factory defaults again and see if you receive the same results.
If so, it could be an issue with the mainboard/motherboard of your laptop, I'd suggest taking it to a repair specialist, if its still worth fixing. If not, a new laptop is in order.

Sorry, I wasn't too clear in my post, but the power button doesn't seem to work, so in turn I can't shut down the computer.

This happened to me and my laptop. But I had a different model (: What I did, was:
1) Turned off my laptop.
2) Unplugged all the cords connecting it (ex: laptop charger, usb, etc)
3) Took out the battery for about 5 mins.
4) I put the battery back in place.
5) Turned my laptop back on and VIOLA (:
Well.. It worked for me. Hehe!
Good luck
