lately i've been finding extra time for a new hobby. so i decided that i should work on my culinary skills. if i were to put my cooking skills on a scale of 1 to 10, it would be a 3. im sure a lot of others can relate. so i'd like to make this thread to ask for those of you with better cooking skills to put your knowledge to the test and teach me some of the basics.

i'm not talking about recipes here. i'm talking about cutting techniques, grilling techniques, how to mix the right spices and how to mix/match different types of meats/veggies to create a unique flavor to call my own.

i'm too busy to attend culinary school, so i have to learn on my own in the off hours. any soompiers that are good with food, do chime in and teach me stuff! anything and everything! [help not just me, but the other folks here who have mastered the art of burning water wink.gif]

i will start posting my research here as well. maybe we'll create the ultimate 'chef maker' thread tongue.gif

mastered the art of burning water

You can burn water?
I think it's just evaporation?

Hmm, for cooking skills I think practice and experimentation is probably the best way to improve, you can't just learn from reading but I think you know that.
I didn't cook things in the microwave for ages and I forgot how long I was supposed to set the timer for and I screwed it.
(I made pumpkin too soft and soggy and exploded the eggs in the microwave - because I set it to 'High' not 'Medium'). >.>

For the spices, it depends what cuisine you are cooking for, I wouldn't know any Korean spices though.
If it's Chinese it's the black sauce (non-salty), fried ginger, garlic, chicken stock, sesame oil (sometimes), soya sauce (salty, comes in dark or light I think).
