Hey Soompiers!
Just wondering if anyone is going to be or already is a Resident Advisor in their respective colleges. I'm going to be an RA at UC Davis. I'm pretty excited about it, but unsure of how it's going to be like. The time commitment is 20 hours/week and there's also being on-call. How was your experience dealing with the freshman and what were your positives and negatives about this job? Thanks!

My roommate is one this year. Let's just say the pay isn't worth it... kind of...

Haha true. That's what I've heard when you have to wake up in the middle of the night and help freshmen who are locked out. But Davis has a area service for that, so it's really not that bad.

i just finished up my freshman year at UMD and honestly, both the girl and guy RA on my floor were NEVER there. seemed like a sweet deal for them. place to live and getting paid for doing nothing

Going on my third and final year this year
.
Love the work: meeting new people and really getting to know them, being creative, collaborating on events and such.
The network between fellow RAs are also pretty strong. As a collective group - I seriously think we've got the funniest and most outrageous stories to tell
yesterday I had 8 hours desk, 8 hours on-call and 8 hours overnight
today I have the same - without the overnight. woot.
(the summer schedule is a bit extensive)
And yes, the pay (we don't get any checks in the mail - just free housing) isn't much. But I keep a side job for spending cash.
