.......I'm getting my '67 bug back on the road. Yeah, I didn't want to go through all the hassel of changing the engine back to smog legal in 1988, so I just cancelled the insurance and non-oped it. Well, one thing led to another, and I just didn't drive it for all those years. I started it every so often, but then the battery died and it took me a couple of years to get around to putting a new one in.
Then the last few ounces of gas evaporated and it wouldn't start.
So a couple weeks ago I pulled off the car cover and decided to try again. Charged up the battery, did an oil change, added some gas, it started right up but the fuel lines were leaking like crazy. This was something which I kind of suspected was going to happen so I already had some fresh fuel line on hand.
Other than the brakes locking up from a leaky wheel cylinder and needing a tuneup and valve adjustment everythings working just fine.

Here's how it looks after a cleanup:

i think in GA if the car is older than 1980 you dont have to make it smog legal. something like that. all i know is that your car would be old enough ha.

Haha It looks pretty clean for a car that is that old. And I am curious too about the gas mileage and hp on that thing

also the g can already run mid 13s stock and the hks intakes adds an estimated 10 extra hp and the exhausts add like 8 so yeah it should shove off about 1.5 to 2 sec off my times

Answers to questions, responses to comments and some more pics.

MPG - 28-34

HP - 53 It's basically a stock 1500cc with the following mods: Bosch Blue Coil and Bosch centrifugal advance distributor. Header is Empi, muffler is a thunderbird since they quit selling the empi glasspacks around here.
I have a stinger exhaust for it too, but it sticks out too far and why would I want to drive around "trolling for cops"?

knitoe: Yeah, ac would be nice, but then the HP would probably be about 26 laugh.gif And at least it has a sunroof and pop out rear windows.

boost: Yeah, it's smog exempt now, but it wasn't in 1988. And I just got sick of the ritual every other year of switching the distributor, header, and aircleaner, and plugging and unplugging the intake manifold, and putting on and taking off all the smog crap. So I just let it sit way past the time I could have gotten it back on the road. Plus at the time I had a company car, and really didn't need to drive it.

jphase: I really don't want Historic vehicle plates, but I wish I had the old black and yellows it wore before it was stolen. As a matter of fact, the car being stolen was how I got ahold of it. The original owner had it stolen and settled with the insurance company before it was recovered. Since I knew her, it was just a matter of having her "buy back" the salvage from the insurance company when it was recovered. The only thing wrong with it was a broken vent window, missing ignition switch and battery.
I repainted it in 1988. The beige is the original VW "Savannah Beige" and the fenders and running boards are a 70s era Ford metallic brown.
I like my fake porsche wheels and hubcaps more than spokes. The car already has 2" dropped spindles in the front.
The front apron is always scraping on driveways etc. Don't really want it any lower. I'm considering going to front disc brakes when I take it in for brake work next week.

Now for the additional pictures:

LT front

RT front (yeah, primer on the RT fender, but I work in a body shop, so it's not a problem.)

Hey nice Bug. Is it a Superbeetle? Is that really the stock color? I've never seen one with that color, which I don't like much but the interior looks really good. I don't know anything about VWs, but I really enjoy seeing what people do to these crazy cars. A few years ago I used to see this hoodless Bug with exposed chrome engine that looked really neat around and at DeAnza College here in the SJ area.

What else do you drive?

Thanks. No, it's not a Superbeetle. The tan is a stock color. Most of the ones I've seen are really faded out.

What else do I drive?

hahahah, wow i just realized that there was a fire extinguisher? is it for precautionary measures? or has it actually caught on fire before? lol anyways it was awhile ago that i realized the only mass produced possibly common cars that were rear engine, rear drive... were porsches, some buses( i think), and the beetle. i know im probably wrong about that, but i thought it was funny.

It's a precautionary measure. I always carry fire extinguishers in my cars, and that's probably why they gaven't caught fire. laugh.gif If I took it out,it would probably catch fire the next day. laugh.gif
The original bugs had a serious design flaw which was the plastic fuel filter right over the distributor. A lot of bugs burned because if not changed often, the heat from the engine and age would cause then to become very brittle. So when they started to leak or if they broke, you had gasoline pouring on the distributor. Instant carbeque.
I use a stainless steel and glass filter with changeable filter cartridges and hose clamps on mine. Still near the distributor, but a lot safer than the plastic ones.

A couple of other mass produced rear engine cars were the water cooled Renault 4CV and the Renault Dauphine.

And if course, who could forget the air cooled Chevy Corvair:
